If your passport expires in 8 months, can you get a 12-month visa (retirement extension) and have the last 4 months be valid on the new passport, or will they only issue the visa up to the expiration date of your passport?
Logically it seems like the latter, but if anyone has direct experience I'd love to hear about it.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The consensus among expats indicates that if your passport expires in 8 months, Thai immigration will only issue a visa extension valid up to the passport's expiry date (8 months), not the full 12 months you may be eligible for. It is advisable to renew your passport before applying for the extension to avoid any complications or limitations with your visa duration. Several users shared experiences emphasizing the importance of having a valid passport when seeking visa extensions.

You will be issued an extension until the validity of your passport. If you happen to be short of the full year then that’s on you for not getting a new passport prior to applying.
Some people choose to do this to “change the date” of their new yearly extension time, because it suits their needs better.
This is nonsense, they you issue you with a full 12 months visa, if you go along to immigration with your new passport they transfer the visa in free of charge, or wait till your next 90 day and do it then, I have done it
yeah I dunno, the thing is it's not a 12-month visa, it's an extension of stay. I don't think you can have it issued past your passport's expiration date.
The immigration only issue the visa up to the expiration date of your passport. If possible, get a new passport, and don't forget to move your old visa, to your new passport before doing the extension.
you still use wrong wording. . . . Immigration will not issue any "visa". They will issue a "-12-months extended stay permit". And you don't "move your visa" from the old passport to the new one. Immigration will only "move" the EXTENSION STAMP
They will issue u the extension up to the validity of your passport and not bringing forward the extra months.....best is apply for a new passport before doing extension
