Can I get a 60-day tourist visa and extend it to 90 days while waiting for a new passport on an expired ed visa?

My ed visa expires in a month and I need a new passport before the next one. As I am concerned about the time frame I was going to do a 60 day and extend to 90, and sort the passport in that time. Can anyone see any issue with doing that? After the 90 I will go back to Ed with a new passport

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is concerned about their expiring ED visa and the timeline for receiving a new passport. They plan to apply for a 60-day tourist visa and then extend it to 90 days before switching back to an ED visa with a new passport. Comments suggest that the user may not need to cancel their initial ED visa unless it was an extension. It is recommended to apply for the extension of stay based on school documents to avoid unnecessary travel.

@Rus****
, IF you're on the original 90 day entry of the ED visa you got you don't need to cancel it. You only need to do it IF you are on an extension of stay from the immigration office.

You're previous post makes me think you're not (seeing as you didn't even know you COULD extend your ED visa ;) )

Most people enroll in schools, get the documentation to go to a thai consulate and get a 90 day, single entry ED visa. Then when that 90 days is running out they get more documentation from their school and go to the immigration office to get a 90 day extension. You do that for the whole year.

That depends totally on how the immigration office up there does it. In Bangkok you can get extensions for up to 15 months then you need to go get another ED visa and start over.

If it's a hand to hand combat school in Chiang Mai it's Jet's school and they certainly know how to run their visa program. Ask them if you can get another 90 day extension or if you need to go out of the country and get another 90 day ED visa and start over.

Remember though IF you have to leave the country to get another visa CANCEL your current extension of stay at the immigration office BEFORE you leave or you could have problems later on.

There is no year visa issued from Hong Kong :/ I believe you got a 90 day single entry ED visa and you go to the immigration office every 90 days for an extension of stay for 1900baht

The school is hand to hand combat in Chiang mai and the visa was done in Hong Kong

I should clarify. My ed visa is a year and that year is up in 30 days.

Why not just apply for the Extension of Stay with your school papers, would give you 90 days and save travels.

Thanks. I was not aware of that

remember that IF you are on an ED visa extension you need to go to the immigration office and cancel it BEFORE you leave the country to get a single entry tourist visa. It does not officially cancel when you leave the country
