What was the application process like for obtaining a DTV visa at the Royal Thai Embassy in Jakarta?

I just picked up my DTV at the Royal Thai Embassy in Jakarta. I applied with a single medical appointment (dermatologist).

It was a very smooth process. Both at submission and pick up there was no wait time. At submission, the (very friendly) officer checked my documents and I explained a few things around the documents related to my financial situation. Other than that no questions were asked and no further documents were requested.

I submitted my application last Wednesday and was told to come back today. However, the valid from date on the visa is the date I submitted my application. They must have processed it right away. If someone is in a rush, it might pay off to chase them up before the assigned pick up date.

I submitted:

Cover letter explaining my general situation and why I am applying for the visa

Print out of an confirmation email of my medical appointment

Print outs from my bank accounts, an overview and statements going back to January this year.

That's it!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user successfully obtained a DTV visa at the Royal Thai Embassy in Jakarta without any delays during submission and pickup. They provided a cover letter, medical appointment confirmation, and bank statements, which all seemed to suffice. No additional documents were requested, and the visa's validity started on the application submission date. The post also generated discussions regarding the required financial documentation and the implications for future visa extensions, highlighting uncertainty surrounding the longevity of the DTV visa based on medical appointments.

Can I apply for this at any Thai embassy? Or does it need to be at my home country?

@Michelle ********
as far as I know you can apply from anywhere. If unsure, maybe check with the respective embassy.

how much time is given for the one dermatologist appointment afterwards? i am planning several expensive procedures at Bumrungrad where i had one already which i spent approximately $8000 going directly to the hospital and then 3 weeks recovering in pattaya.

I am not sure I understand your question. Do you mean how long does the visa allow me to stay in Thailand?

the DTV always has a 5 year validity.

@Stefanie ********
correct ✅
Kace *******
@Stefanie ********
that is the potential of dtv yes. it doesn’t mean you will get 5 years for your dermatology appointment. do they not specify how long you get in your individual case?
James ********
@Kace ******
no.. Once approved the DTV visa 3 is valid for 5 years with multiple entry. 180 days stamp each entry.

@Stefanie ********
yes i know it says 5 years. that is the MAXIMUM. it definitely does not mean or establish or guarantee a set time. i wondered if the medical personnel told you. i see they did not.
James ********
@Kace ******
it's a 5 year Visa... period !

@Kace ******
this is not how this visa works. The same rules regarding validity apply, independent from how you obtained it.

zero new information

@Kace ******
it's a 5 year DTV visa... Valid for 5 full years.

Two questions:

1) Did they ask for the cover letter? I don't see that listed as a requirement on their website.

2) After receiving your new DTV Passport Stamp, does it specify your category ("Soft Power") or just say DTV?

no, they didn't ask for the cover letter. But I thought it is beneficial to explain about my current situation and the medical appointment as I am continuing treatment from when I spent time in Bangkok earlier this year.

The visa sticker only says DTV.

Getting DTV with a single medical appointment seems preferable to voluntarily giving Thailand insight into your employment/business/income history, complete with a cucked letter saying the slave is 'allowed to work from remote'. Thanks for your Jakarta report and enjoy your 5 year visa!

Good for you. Now the question is what will happen when you want an extension (180 days/one year). It would not seem reasonable to think that Thai authorities will let you live practically full time for 5 years on the basis of one medical appointment. And the fact is that right now no one knows how these types of situations will be handled in the future. Foreign Affairs likes to advertise the visa and issues them abroad, but the fact of the matter is that they don’t administer the visa process, only Immigration does, and they have not said a word to date about how they will deal with the DTV. Good luck.
Sylvia ******
@Hector *******
apparently it’s the normal $1,900 to extend not $10k.
James ********
@Sylvia *****
nope that's not what Phuket Thailand Immigration office is saying. A simple border bounce gets you a new 180 day stamp during the 5 year DTV visa.
Hector ********
@Sylvia *****
Lots of « apparentlies » on this matter. But the issue noted has nothing to do with price, but how the case would be evaluated by Immigration when the time comes at their office in Thailand or upon reentry.
Craig *******
@Hector *******
the extension option for this visa makes no sense to me. The visa is for unlimited entries for a 5 year period. Why pay 10k to get it extended, why not just do a border bounce? It is astounding that they are giving out 5 year visas for single medical appointments. TIT
James ********
@Craig ******
agreed ✅ and do simple border bounce by Land or Air each 180 days for 5 years. Only need to do a 90 day report when in Thailand 90 days.
Hector ********
@Craig ******
Yes, but you can’t stay in the country for a full five years. It’s when you do you reports, or go out and come back in that Immigration might want to reassess your visa rights. I don’t know. I am just pointing out the obvious in an uncertain environment and with lack of time experience to go by with this visa.
Craig *******
@Hector *******
I've never heard of an immigration officer "reassessing visa rights" of visa holders. Their concern is generally with those entering visa exempt. I expect changes to the DTV to eliminate the apparent loophole that is issuing 5 year visas to attend a 1 month cooking class or single medical appointment. But I think those that already have DTV's should be safe.
David ****************
@Craig ******
agree! they most likely change the requriments soon.
Andy *****
@Craig ******
we shall see later on how they deal with it if they do. I mean generally here if those are on ED visa they do ask and assess their thai upon re entering. I've never heard that happening in other countries I've lived in. So we surely shall see
Andy *****
@Hector *******
we will have to wait to see. Maybe they will start to be picky about it. This visa is too easy and good to be true
Hector ********
@Andy ****
Exactly my point. I don’t mean to burst people’s bubble but just to bring back to reality those who think they know how this will play out after they receive a DTV visa for one doctor’s appointment or one short academic course. I think that the real remote internet workers for which this visa is best designed will probably have few problems in keeping their visa for 5 years, but those surfing on “soft power” based DTVs cannot assume at this time that it will be five years of easy sailing until Immigration finally explains the ground rules, about which they have said nothing yet. If a simple border bounce with no other documentation is permitted during 5 years, well good for every “soft power” DTV visa holder. But only time and experience would show that, and as usual different offices and border points might have different interpretations which might also change over time.
James ********
@Hector *******
not a doubt.. it's a 5 year multiple entry DTV visa. PERIOD ! ONCE issued it's good for 5 full years.

And your single medical appointment is planned for how long after your day of visa application ?

Thank you so much

@Pauli *******
the appointment is in late October. Is that your question? We will still be travelling a bit more in Indonesia before going to Thailand.
Pauli ********
@Stefanie ********
yes just wanted to know if a medical appointment for the next month is valid if I do it this way too.

You just showed them a proof of confirmation by email or something ?

thank you ☺️

Did your statements shown that you have 500 000 bahts ( approx 13,5k€) since January on your bank account ? Or you think if I have this money in bank account only since 1-2 months its also fine ?
Paul *******
@Pauli *******
1-2 months is more than fine for Jakarta.

as said above, it is always best to ask the Embassy directly. It wasn't an issue for me as my funds are well over the required minimum and have been so for years.

Fantastic Jakarta! Thanks 💕
