Me & my wife are traveling to Thailand like we do each year at Christmas for 30 days only. We've heard the E- visa is starting on the 1st December. Do we need the E-visa?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The original post inquires whether an E-visa is necessary for a 30-day trip to Thailand starting December 1. The responses clarify that the E-visa has existed for years, while the new ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) system, which is yet to be implemented, is under discussion and may not start as planned. Importantly, for a 30-day stay, travelers generally do not need a visa but can enter on a visa exemption, allowing them to stay visa-free for up to 60 days depending on their nationality.
THAILAND ELECTRONIC TRAVEL AUTHORIZATION (ETA)

If you’re only going for 30days you don’t need a visa

As I said above mate, no worries nowadays.

He asked is it supposed to start in Dec 1 if it is does he need it so I told him

Nothing is confirmed as yet as far as I know.. however it has been proposed and is up for discussion with the relevant authorities in Thailand.
David **********
You don't need e visa it is a easy way to go through immigration if you don't have e visa it will take longer

wow, here you go again, mixing things up! You need to figure out the right vocabulary for different things... Don't you read any of the replies to the comments you've made? 🤔

One more time: E-visa is NOT an "easy way to go through immigration". E-visa is the electronic system used for visa-applications.

The purposed ETA is an Electronic Travel Authorization and if/when Thailand start with ETA, it will not be optional - it will be mandatory for those who enter Thailand without visa (using visa exemption). Before they travel to Thailand they will need to apply/register their travel details online for authorization.

There will be no such thing as "if you don't have it immigration will take longer".

The plan to start using ETA in Thailand in December has been postponed though and it will not happen this year.

your wrong this post asked about e-visa not ETA

E visa has been available at many embassies for over 1 year. What are talking about
Michael ***********
@Jo *********
I used E-visa 2 yrs ago. It's a Thai government website not an embassy.
Jo **********
@Michael **********
incorrect mine was issued at the embassy in the Hague I have in front of me

Not for 30 days

What is 30 days?

The Elisa is a processing tool register for that to make queues quicker

If you mean Visa Exempt that is currently 60 days

I dont need you to correct me read the full conversation

@Graham *****
I mean the guy is going for 30 days and doesn't need a visa but in December e visa check starts if you register before you go it will be quicker through immigration
Cissi *********
@David *********
you are right about them not needing a visa, but wrong in what you write after that.

The one that needs to read the full conversation seems to be you!

E-visa has been available for years (it is the electronic system used to apply for visa). What was supposed to be launched in December was ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) for those who travel without visa... That has been postponed though and there are no new dates released yet.
Keith *********
Knowing Thailand the Thai government doesn't know what it's up to at the moment I would apply for it just in case

@Keith ********
it's not necessary for 30 days
Cissi *********
@Keith ********
since there is no such thing as a new "e-visa" from December 1 - how would you apply for something that doesn't exist? 🤔
Keith *********
@Cissi ********
ETA my dear person I think that's what the original post was talking about
Cissi *********
@Keith ********
I am sure they had this mixed up too... but you wrote "I would apply for it just in case", hence my question - ETA has not been launched yet so technically it is impossible to "apply just in case".

Another example on why it is important not to spread rumours in Facebook groups, until the proposals has been voted through the Thai Parlament, and is publiced in the Royal Gazette.

No need. Just roll up and immigration will give you 60 days visa free entry.

My pleasure, don’t get involved in all these complicated machinations with people who have no idea what they are talking about and just confuse the issue. Rock up, get your 60 day visa free entry and if you want to stay longer, wander along to your nearest immigration office, pay 1900 baht and they will extend it for a further 30 days. Simples.

To all who replied my point was to the original post .The couple do not need to apply for a visa as they would be in Thialand for only 30 days .Iam am fully aware about visa application for Thialand. My point was regarding visa exemption as it is now .
Tim ***********
@Guy *******
you said “you get one for 60”. They don’t get a visa. They get to enter the country visa free for 60 days. Wording is important

WOW! You come to Thailand since 30 years and still don't know what you get stamped in upon a visa-exempt entry? There NEVER was a 30-days tourist visa. And there is no 60-days visa. What you were doing for the past years is you entered WITHOUT a visa, and received a 30-days "admitted until" STAY PERMIT stamp, not a visa. And since July 15 you will get stamped in for a 60-days stay permit (not a visa!)

that’s what I said Cissi you’ve always been entry for free on a 30 day tourist visa now this has been extended to 60 if your country is on the list. I’ve been visiting Thialand for the past 30 years.

@Guy *******

@Guy *******
yet 7th Dec 2022 according to your post was your 3rd time in 30years ?

It's not a visa you get on arrival as Cissi said, it's visa exempt, just an arrival stamp no visa.
Cissi *********
@Guy *******
I know that the visa exemption has been extended... you miss my point - you keep repeating that they get tourist visa and they don't! They are eligible for a visa exemption, meaning they are allowed to enter without any visa. A tourist visa is something different and you apply and pay for that at/to a Thai Embassy before you travel. People keep mixing this up, hence I corrected you.

(Btw I've been to Thailand 50+ times and my first time in Thailand was 1980, even though neither yours or my travel history has no relevance in this matter.)
Damo ***********
@Cissi ********
wow.. 50+ times? hmm I suppose 👏 is in order 🙄😒
William **************
Looks like the ETA has been postponed for now as they work out the logistics.
Andy ************
@William *************
They're looking at bringing in the 300 baht Tourist Tax as part of the ETA application and they've hit a wall with incorporating the payment software
William **************
@Andy ***********
it should be interesting to see of the private hospitals will accept to 300 baht medical coverage on arrival or only the government hospitals.
Andy ************
@William *************
What medical coverage are you talking about?
Brandon ************
@William *************
They already dropped that part from the proposal. Now it's just to support tourism, whatever that means. Too hard to make the money disappear when it has a specific purpose.
James **********
@Andy ***********
and yet some think Thailand 🇹🇭 will go digital money only 😂 not a chance .
Andy ************
@James *********
The tourist tax you will pay online before the ETA is issued
James **********
@Andy ***********
read above payment software hit a wall 😂
Andy ************
@James *********
Getting the banks to come to the party is the problem. They'll want a cut of the 300baht. QR code PromptPay works brilliantly in Thailand, so I don't know why the government won't accept that or one of the other methods of cashless payments. Let's face it, Thailand is almost cashless now, but immigration still won't move with the times
James **********
@Andy ***********
cashless is about control be careful what you wish for just saying ,,,,cash is cash and worth it’s value digital is charged a % why do you think the banks in the western world want cashless, you really need to wake up mate .
Andy ************
@James *********
Nothing to wake up to mate. I use QR code PromptPay in Thailand. No bank charges. I hate carrying cash. I just find it odd that the only place I use cash is the 1900 baht I pay to immigration each year for my visa extension.
James **********
@Andy ***********
your missing the point my mate ,,,it isn’t just about you it’s all of us round the world 🌎 I’m sorry but if you think it’s convenient for you to be controlled through a digital currency your so lost ,,,, you have no idea what’s coming maybe 🤔 do the research you might have a different thought process.
Andy ************
@James *********
Fortunately unlike you I'm not frightened, and I've never listened to deranged conspiracy theorists. I'm happy being cashless and that's the way it'll stay.
James **********
@Andy ***********
I bet you took the poison jabs also head in the sand crack ok my mate , your the one who’s deranged as all has been found out with the Covid lies , but you call us conspiracy theorists lmao 🤣 just another selfish delusional man who has no idea what’s coming
Andy ************
James **********
@Andy ***********
your so blind I was living in the uk 🇬🇧 when Covid hit , no cash only cards or phone to reduce the spread your really are delusional.
Andy ************
@James *********
Not interested in the spread of covid, I'm just interested in convenience, but anti-vaxxers and vegans are all the same. You want to control what everyone does. Don't you believe in freedom of choice or is it all YOUR way? I don't use cash, but I have absolutely no problem at all with those who prefer to use it. Freedom of choice
James **********
@Andy ***********
yes I do believe in freedom of choice but we won’t have a choice soon if we all keep supporting the CDBC , cash is king when you spend it the recipient gats 100% of the cash I pay 100% with cash when CDBC are forced upon us you will understand how we will be controlled, it’s coming god help us, it’s one of the reasons I retired here to Thailand 🇹🇭 the western world’s is not what it was now ,,,
Andy ************
@James *********
Thailand is almost cashless, you've come to the wrong place!
James **********
James **********

No idea what you're talking about, but like most conspiracy theorist whackos you talk in riddles 😂😂😂
James **********
@Andy ***********
head in the sand as I said crack on .
Lorna ********
If you travel there every year, how do you normally enter? A quick search using the correct terminology will answer your question multiple times
Cissi *********
No.

It is not an E-visa, it is ETA, a system for Electronic Travel Authorization (similar to what many other countries have). The introduction was planned to start for some countries in December, but it has been delayed.
Michael ********
Its not a visa and its not likely to start this year.
Brandon ************
You are very, very mixed up.

E-visa has been available for YEARS. E-visa is where you APPLY for and PAY for a visa through a Thai embassy.

You are asking about ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) for those traveling without any visa. No one knows anything about this yet. There is a government proposal that says it MAY start in December as a pilot program only for Australians for 6 months, but there have already been articles saying that it won't happen in December. No one even knows if it will happen at all.
Michael ***********
@Brandon ***********
it's already been postponed. Won't be in December.
