Me & my wife are traveling to Thailand like we do each year at Christmas for 30 days only. We've heard the E- visa is starting on the 1st December. Do we need the E-visa?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The original post inquires whether an E-visa is necessary for a 30-day trip to Thailand starting December 1. The responses clarify that the E-visa has existed for years, while the new ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) system, which is yet to be implemented, is under discussion and may not start as planned. Importantly, for a 30-day stay, travelers generally do not need a visa but can enter on a visa exemption, allowing them to stay visa-free for up to 60 days depending on their nationality.
Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC)

WARNING: Only trust Thai government websites with .go.th domains or Thai agent websites with .co.th or .in.th domains, as these require verified Thai registration and cannot be registered anonymously.

The official TDAC form is available at tdac.immigration.go.th, which uses the official .go.th government domain.

The services by AGENTS CO., LTD. does NOT charge any fees for arrivals within 72 hours. If you need to book more than 72 hours in advance, there is a service fee of $8.

Do not trust other sites pretending to be a trustworthy agency. Pay attention to delivery time - the service operated by AGENTS CO., LTD. has 1 minute delivery time for arrivals within 72 hours.

Don't fall for sites pretending to be agents.co.th or the official government tdac.immigration.go.th website. Always double-check the exact domain in your browser.

Scam services may take days to process your application, others may not even do anything. With these TDAC scam services you also need to worry about double charges.

Please watch out for TDAC misinformation spread by fugitive Jesse Nickles and his many fake accounts on Quora, TripAdvisor, Reddit, and other platforms.

wow, here you go again, mixing things up! You need to figure out the right vocabulary for different things... Don't you read any of the replies to the comments you've made? 🤔

One more time: E-visa is NOT an "easy way to go through immigration". E-visa is the electronic system used for visa-applications.

The purposed ETA is an Electronic Travel Authorization and if/when Thailand start with ETA, it will not be optional - it will be mandatory for those who enter Thailand without visa (using visa exemption). Before they travel to Thailand they will need to apply/register their travel details online for authorization.

There will be no such thing as "if you don't have it immigration will take longer".

The plan to start using ETA in Thailand in December has been postponed though and it will not happen this year.

you are right about them not needing a visa, but wrong in what you write after that.

The one that needs to read the full conversation seems to be you!

E-visa has been available for years (it is the electronic system used to apply for visa). What was supposed to be launched in December was ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) for those who travel without visa... That has been postponed though and there are no new dates released yet.

My pleasure, don’t get involved in all these complicated machinations with people who have no idea what they are talking about and just confuse the issue. Rock up, get your 60 day visa free entry and if you want to stay longer, wander along to your nearest immigration office, pay 1900 baht and they will extend it for a further 30 days. Simples.

WOW! You come to Thailand since 30 years and still don't know what you get stamped in upon a visa-exempt entry? There NEVER was a 30-days tourist visa. And there is no 60-days visa. What you were doing for the past years is you entered WITHOUT a visa, and received a 30-days "admitted until" STAY PERMIT stamp, not a visa. And since July 15 you will get stamped in for a 60-days stay permit (not a visa!)

I know that the visa exemption has been extended... you miss my point - you keep repeating that they get tourist visa and they don't! They are eligible for a visa exemption, meaning they are allowed to enter without any visa. A tourist visa is something different and you apply and pay for that at/to a Thai Embassy before you travel. People keep mixing this up, hence I corrected you.

(Btw I've been to Thailand 50+ times and my first time in Thailand was 1980, even though neither yours or my travel history has no relevance in this matter.)

Getting the banks to come to the party is the problem. They'll want a cut of the 300baht. QR code PromptPay works brilliantly in Thailand, so I don't know why the government won't accept that or one of the other methods of cashless payments. Let's face it, Thailand is almost cashless now, but immigration still won't move with the times

Nothing to wake up to mate. I use QR code PromptPay in Thailand. No bank charges. I hate carrying cash. I just find it odd that the only place I use cash is the 1900 baht I pay to immigration each year for my visa extension.

No.

It is not an E-visa, it is ETA, a system for Electronic Travel Authorization (similar to what many other countries have). The introduction was planned to start for some countries in December, but it has been delayed.

You are very, very mixed up.

E-visa has been available for YEARS. E-visa is where you APPLY for and PAY for a visa through a Thai embassy.

You are asking about ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) for those traveling without any visa. No one knows anything about this yet. There is a government proposal that says it MAY start in December as a pilot program only for Australians for 6 months, but there have already been articles saying that it won't happen in December. No one even knows if it will happen at all.
