TLDR : Answer Summary
To cover your 45-day stay in Thailand from December 6th, you have a couple of options. You can enter Thailand under a visa exemption for 30 days and then extend it for an additional 30 days (costing around 1900 baht) at any immigration office. Alternatively, you can apply for a TR (Tourist) visa which grants you 60 days upon entry and can also be extended. It is suggested to apply for the tourist visa before your trip to avoid the hassle of dealing with immigration for extensions while in Thailand.

I think they just started using the Ivisa scheme. I started using it and it was very quick. Then I got a call back that day. Thought it was a scam. Thai government can't operate ifficiently like that.

Well, it depends when you want to do a bit of legwork. During holiday with visa exempt and 30 day extension at immigration. Tourist visa from Embassy before departing.

Get a tourist visa from your home country now so you don't have to worry about going to immigration and getting an extension while you're in Thailand. It's a waste of at least half a day and stress you don't need while on your trip.

Two choices basically
Visa exempt 30 days plus 30 days extension in country (1900 baht)
Or the TR visa which can be done electronically now this is for 60 days and can be extended.
Benifit of going for the latter is you will have no problem with return flight booking and dont have to waste time dealing with immigration in country
More countries were added last week, will eventually get there. Though Australian embassies always seem to act a bit different, but the writer of the post I believe is from UK so answer is applicable to him.
Yes if you do the 30-day visa exemption you get saved from having to go through the unpleasant visa process. Then once you're in Thailand you can get it extended.
