Can you change the renewal date on a one-year retirement visa extension in Thailand?

Dear Thai Visa experts: Let’s say someone obtains their one year extension on a retirement visa on January 1st. Is it possible to “walk back” the renewal date by applying earlier and earlier for subsequent extensions?

If the answer is “no”, then how long before a one-year extension expires can the renewal application be initiated?

Thanks much!

TLDR : Answer Summary
It is not possible to 'walk back' the renewal date of a one-year retirement visa extension in Thailand. The new extension starts the day after the previous one expires. Applications for the extension can typically be made 30 or 45 days prior to expiration, depending on the immigration office. There might be some flexibility in specific cases, but generally, the renewal date cannot be shifted earlier.

If your passport expires during the next 12 months the Imm. Officer will only extend as far as a the PP expiry date.. So "shortening" it should be possible even without the PP expiring..

ONCE many years ago I had someone ask the officer for only an 11 month extension because it was always too close to when they were leaving the country every year AND surprise, surprise the officer did it and shorted them one month on their new extension (moving their expiration date a month earlier)

NOW will your office do that for you? Who knows, as I said it was many years ago (back when we still used Soi SuanPlu Immigration office in Bangkok long before it moved to Chaengwattana

All you can do is ask. Shorting your year extension is the only way to 'move the date' inside the country.

The new extension start date is the day after the old one expires. The advantage of applying early is it gives you time to sort out problems. There is no walking back of the "renewal" date.

Just wondering what would be the benefit of walking back the "renewal" date?

Personally I would like to do this to get my renewal date away from a month I would like to travel.

I'd like to do the same thing as my current date falls right at the beginning date of when I would like to travel home. It would be fine if I would get the 1 year stamp when I apply instead of the 30 day under consideration stamp. I'm waiting until I apply for my 2nd 1 year extension to know if the 30 days is standard procedure or if it was just because it was my first 1 year extension. If that is standard procedure I may ask them to short me 1 month or let it expire and start the process over so the dates line up better for me.

The "Under Consideration" stamp does not add or remove time to your current "admitted to" stamp. The balance of the time would be granted when the under consideration stamp is closed out.

yes. Thank you. I understand that. I did not mean to imply I thought the 1 year extension would be every 13 months. The issue that it causes is that it means I have to be in Thailand 30 days later to get the remainder of the year stamp. My one year extension is due in June, which is the beginning of my kids summer break. That would be fine, but the 30 day under consideration stamp means I need to be in Thailand to close it out in the middle of July, which is in the middle of their break. I would prefer to have more flexibility by not having to worry about any immigration requirements their whole break.

To my knowledge, people don't get under consideration stamps for one year extension of stay based on retirement

Kevin Gustafson. Ok, yeah that would make sense. The only way you're really going to do it is to leave without a reentry permit, and to start the cycle again when re-entering

1. There is no "renewal" of an extension of stay, you're purchasing a new extension of stay.

2. If you are getting multiple extension of stays for the same reason, one year is added on to the "admitted to" stamp.

3. Chiang Mai, Bangkok, Buriram, Phuket, Chiang Rai and a couple of others all allow people to apply for extensions when they have 45 days or less left on their current stamp. The other immigration offices are 30 days. However, ask your local immigration office for specific details.
