I'm on a Retirement visa extension which expires in early December. Unfortunately it looks likely that I'll be out of the country then. Does anybody know how long before the expiry date I can apply for a further extension?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The general rule is that most immigration offices in Thailand will allow you to apply for an extension of your Retirement visa when you have 30 days or less remaining. However, larger offices, such as those in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Phuket, may allow applications with up to 45 days left. Additionally, it has been mentioned that some people have managed to apply for extensions even two months before the expiration date through agents.

Almost every office (except Chonburi ones) will allow you to apply for extension when you have 30 days or less. The larger offices (Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket) will allow you apply when you have 45 days or less.

Thanks Brandon. I get mine through the Sri Racha office, which usually takes around 7-10 days for approval, so either 45 or 30 days less should fit in nicely.
I would definitely go early and ask when you can apply because that office is in Chonburi and both the Chonburi main office and Jomtien do not allow you to apply until you are within the last few days of your expiration date.
