TLDR : Answer Summary
You can generally apply for a retirement extension 30 days before your visa expires. However, experiences suggest that in some locations like Jomtien, applicants may be able to apply up to 5 weeks (35 days) in advance if needed. It's advisable to check the specific immigration office's policy, as it may vary by location.

, has a good point (y) IF you can prove you're going to leave before your extension expires and not come back until after it expires many offices will let you apply for a new one before you go. I had a friend get her yearly extension almost 3 months early because she was leaving and not comin' back until after it expired.

In Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket you can apply for an extension of say 45 days or less before your current stamp expires.
Most immigration offices allow 30 days or less, and a few (Jomtien of note) allow you to do it when you have 15 days or less.

And what immigration office are you using?
