For the 30 day extension (first time), can I just put the test & go hotel I stayed at the one night?

As I’ve been staying at a friends obviously not doing a tm30 here, I know they are “supposed to” but you know.

I’d be going to do it at the temporary location muang thongtani.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The question revolves around whether an expat can use their Test & Go hotel where they stayed for one night to apply for a 30-day visa extension in Thailand, considering they have been staying with a friend and haven't completed a TM30 registration. The comments stress the importance of having a printed TM30 if required and suggest that immigration officials may verify hotel stays online.

You'll need to check into a hotel a vet a current tm30

So has anyone done it recently there and actually been asked for one ?

You need a physically printed TM30 if they want one. So just knowing your hotel did it won't help you if you didn't get the printout from them.

The hotel entered your arrival and departure date so immigration would know you checked out if immigration officer checks it online

Not sure if they ask for TM30 for 30 day extension there but you would need an up to date copy if they do.
