TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, after collecting your new passport from the South African embassy in Bangkok, you can go to Phuket Immigration to transfer your visa. The embassy will provide necessary forms which you need to fill out. However, it's important to note that while visas can't be transferred, you can transfer an Extension of Stay. Valid documentation and both old and new passports will be required at the immigration office.

Just out of interest, how long did it take to get your new SA passport after you applied for it?

You can transfer long term stamps at the place of issue only. But in some rare situation, agents can manage to transfer for you elsewhere.

which visa are you renewing.? A visa basically permits you to enter a country so once you have entered it is used. As you are already in the country you cannot be issued with another one.

You do not say which visa you have, possibly you are confusing an extension of permssion to stay for a visa.

you actually transfer whatever is allowing you to stay in Thailand, be it a tourist visa, an exempt stamp, or any long term visa extension. Most people with a short term visa simply wait until they leave, and show both new and old passport, but they can also go to immigration and have their entry stamp transferred into their new passport. There is no restriction on doing that.

Garrett Greenwald I think you're mistaken, you've never been able to transfer a visa, only an extention of stay, admitted to stay stamp and a re-entry permit

You're mistaken, you cant transfer a VISA, only admitted, extention and re-entry stamps. If you have a visa sticker you need to carry both passports until it expires.
