after coming to Thailand with new passport, is it necessary to transfer the current visa to new passport? Do I get charged for not doing it?

Answer summary

When arriving in Thailand with a new passport, you may need to transfer your visa to the new passport. It's important to clarify whether you hold an actual visa or an extension of stay with a re-entry permit, as the rules may differ.

How about we first sort out if you're on a real VISA or you're on an extension of stay w/re-entry permit that you got from inside the country at the immigration office

the Elite is easy. I got the visa moved to a new passport on arrival in Bangkok airport..

They of cause need a notice in advance and a picture of the new passport..

if they told you they can move it, I would weigh in that it's not optional and you would go get it moved to the new passport.

the only actual visa I know that gets moved from passport to passport is the Elite visa

The thing is that SMART visa is so uncommon, I honestly don't know if they move it or not

Sorry 😕

got it, thanks 🙏

when you get here go to Cham Churi Square and see what they say, they'll know, you can't be the first foreigner who swapped passports with that visa

Guvanch ****

yes, that’s right

that's a rare one 😮

Visas as a rule can't be transferred

You show BOTH passports when you exit/enter the country for the duration of the visa in the old passport, they will stamp you in and out on the new one and make a notation that the visa is in the old passport
