TLDR : Answer Summary
The consensus is that it is not possible to open a Thai bank account with a DTV (Digital Work Visa) since this category is primarily for tourists and does not grant eligibility for banking services. Some users mention that owning property could potentially influence bank policies, but experiences vary widely. Alternative solutions discussed include managing finances through international platforms like Wise and Revolut, as well as handling property-related payments in cash or finding ways around the limitations by switching to a different visa type. Overall, the situation reflects recent changes in banking policies in Thailand, complicating the ability for digital nomads to manage their finances.

No you can’t but you can use wise, Revolut and for qr paiment truemoney. I have some property and I manage like this

Do you have experience with Alipay and QR payment?

Reasonably one should be able to open a bank account on such a visa as Dtv that allows for such a long term duration of stay over 5 years. This whole thing needs to be amended and is another hit for the tourism confidence in Thailand. Making unnecessary complicated to stay as a digital nomad for example.

Yes I believe myself from my own experience from staying quite a long time in Thailand. I belive most Dtv holders will stay in Thailand quite a bit and are not regular tourists. Having a bank account wastly facilitates an extended stay in Thailand and also saves on transaction fees. Why not argue for the betterment of Dtv visa holders situation than the contrary.

@James *****
I know the DTV is used to live in Thailand, but that is not what it is meant for. There are other visa to live in Thailand and then you can open bank account. Is saving on transaction costs really worth to have a bank account? When you are that desperate in saving money, I wonder if you stay in the right country. When not earning the fees from you, how will bank get those costs from you? I expect you don't want to pay for other bank services too. Apart from QR promptpay I see no real advantages in a Thai bank account.

Well usually banks make money from deposited money? You can save by transferring money cheaply when you exchange rates are favorable. It also makes it easier to withdraw larger or smaller amounts. QR payment is also a plus. I don't see why one would be opposed to being able to open bank account. It's better to have the option to do it than to not. You can always chose not to use such a service. From my experience It's a game changer to have a bank account here. Not long ago it was ok to open account with a tourist visa. Then some bank office went corrupt and now everyone is treated like a potential money launderer.

Internationally it is not very common that tourists can open bank accounts, and generally they are not interested too. When banks only had to make money from deposited money it was bad bussiness. Personally O do not see it as a gamechanger, I am in Thailand parts of the year for some time, but wa able to spend over 5M without a Thai bank account. I prefer online finance companies. When I see the bureaucratic system from Thai banks even for very simple things I can do online within a minute I am happy I don't use it. As a tourist I never ever had the idea to open a bank account in any of the countries I visited. Banks from my home country just operate international and online. For exchanging money you certainly not need a Thai account, Wise and Revolut are cheap and have a lot of options for exchanging money.

i sometimes use wise, occasionally. Any reason for using revolut over wise for example (sorry if difficult ro answer maybe just you could give main reason for the one or another) 🙏

In fact I both use Wise and Revolut, both are free to use and when the card of one of them not accepted I just have another.

In my home country Netherlands Revulut is a real bank, making some transactions easier.

Most times Wise has a bit better transaction costs / exchange rates when sending money

for me it is just to simplify payments. But with Wise I guess i in a way have a solution. Not sure if 100% but possibly.

But I want to pay me thai taxes from rental income. Not sure how to do this, maybe you know? Actually for many reason not least moral i am very careful ensuring i pay all my fees and taxes in Thailand. (I even support local community further with funds)

Thanks

Thai income is not forbidden on DTV, but be careful that renting property can be seen as work which is forbidden. When you let an agent do everything concerning the rental you might be OK.

yes i read up! You are right 🙏 Will end up letting agent do ”all”

@James *****
that's a tourist visa lol, nobody wants us to actually live here all those 5 years, just come to spend your money off your foreign bank accounts and leave without drama of farang entitlement

@James *****
Hit for tourism because they cannot open bank accounts? Do you believe yourself? Then tourism in most countries would stop...

Stay on DTV is 180 days, for most digital nomads enough and they don't normally open bank accounts in every country they stay for a while, they just use services like Wise.
Robert *******
So you bought property but you need a bank account for rental income?

Change to the Non Immigrant B and work permit for working and open a bank account without problems.

I'll donate 10,000 baht to a local charity for a pinned group disclaimer/pop-up/acknowledged agreement/ that bank accounts can't be opened with DTV, so don't bother asking.
Benjamin *********
No. DTV is a tourist visa. Bank doent open account to tourist anymore.
James *******
There was an exception before for property owners to access banking services. However that’s long gone now. I visited 10+ branches and all said no, no exceptions no matter how many properties you have

Only workaround would be buying total of 10mb of property then switching to Investment visa. Which is a worse visa if you ask me.

Just have to wait and pray they reverse all this nonsense soon

@James ******
Thanks, wonder if you found any reasonable workaround without Thai account? THANKS

That's a no

There are only few visas that you can get a new bank account with. DTV is an excellent tourist visa however. Go to different banks for a talk, you wont get an answer from here since this is Thailand.... ;)

Dont ask here...go to bank and try to explain..

DTV does not make you eligible for a Thai bank account.

Owning property might in some bsnks, msybe.

However, bills and taxes can be paid in cash.

But rental income will be more difficult.

Wise might be a option though. Especially if renting out to other foreigners.

I can hope the owning property bit here can fix this. A Thai bank account would solve all my remaining question marks and I would be good to go...
Luit *****************
Be aware that depending how you rent the property it might be seen as working, which is forbidden on DTV.

How u pay for your property?

@Jesper ******
Transfer funds from abroad, 100% no mortgage

@David **********
This is also absurd, you invest in property in Thailand but can't open an account on that basis.

turist dont need a bank Acc... Dosh mather if you buy a car or house or Condo or bike.. U just are turist and All ways go to be are turist.. Thats the way it is...
James ******
Anonym deltagare 124Doesn't necessarily have to be like wich is proven by the fact that it didn't use to be the case. Short term tourist I agree it's no need for a bank account. But for a Dtv holder it surely would make things a lot easier.
