How can someone on a DTV visa access banking services in Thailand?

Aug 1, 2025
I live in Thailand & have a bank account, but I have a friend coming on a DTV visa.

I have heard that you can’t open a bank account on a DTV visa.

So my question is how do people negotiate this?

Access to cash without the fees, scanning to pay & receive payment for items sold?

There may be other benefits of a bank account also, but how are you getting around this?

TLDR : Answer Summary
Individuals on a DTV (Digital Nomad) visa in Thailand face challenges in opening bank accounts due to banking regulations that generally restrict accounts to long-term visa holders. Users have shared alternative methods for managing finances, such as utilizing mobile payment apps like Tagthai and Wise for transactions, and withdrawing cash using international debit cards that offer lower fees. Some suggest bringing cash for better exchange rates or leveraging apps from their home country. Social connections, such as having a local partner, might also provide avenues to open a bank account, though it’s advised to keep minimal funds in such accounts. Additionally, participants stress the evolving banking landscape where permanent residency and stabilizing factors, like consistent income, play significant roles in account access.

Banks in Thailand are like everywhere in the world, interested in having good stable customers, that have a permanent address, a steady easy traceable income, and use the account all year round.

That is why the banks are reluctant to give accounts to people on short time ( read: tourist ) visas, and who only spend part of the year in Thailand.

Don’t expect to get a residence certificat, until you have stayed at a permanent adress in at least 3 month, since that is what the residence certificat should confirm.

Furthermore the added attention on whitewashing of money, is an added burden on the banks, so reluctant depositing large amounts isn’t a guaranteed way to open an account.

The value of a resident certificat, had gone down, since Immigration Officers are giving them to people that are not on a longterm visa, or have stayed severel months at 1 adress in Thailand, so even if it is a formal requirement, the bank make up their own assesment of the stability of the want-to-be customer.

Be aware there is a error in the start of the article ( and several other copy - paste media with the same article )

A Thai Bankaccount has never been a requirement to get DTV, on the contrary it has been one of the big advantage over other visa, that you could get DTV as long as you could show 500.000 Baht equivalent in any bank anywhere in the world.

It has never been the intention that DTV visaholders should be in need of a Thai bankaccount.

Wise and Moreta have been the saving graces for me out here. I still pay the 200-300baht atm fee but no actual atm fee on Wise’s side and they give the best exchange rates that i’ve been able to find consistently. You can wire people money through it as well as long as they’re banking with the bigger banks out here. Moreta is hit or miss whether it’ll work since it doesn’t* accept personal QR codes and it’s difficult to tell the difference before scanning but just make sure they have a backup payment option if they’re unsure if the QR works

I think you meant doesn't work. But I found it's easy to tell. The account must show the full account #. If there are any xxxx it will not work. Mostly it's for paying things that are corporate owned. It rarely ever works at a local vendor.

I switched from 12 years on non-O retirement visa/extension to DTV. Impeccable banking history. Never once used an agent to carry out dodgy transactions.

Where's your friend from? Most Asian banks allow to use their native apps to pay with QR in Thailand and get cash withdrawals with low or no fees.

Participante anónimo then I think his best resource would be a card that waives or reimburses international ATM fees, such as, Charles Schwab, I've heard (don't know the details).

Tagthai like apps are available for QR scanning

Other than that it’s all WU, ATM’s or cash withdraws from banks

If they bring money bring crispy USD $100 hundred dollar bills for the best exchange rates

You can use Tagthai, True money, and another app (I forgot the name, starts with an M) to scan pay. As for getting cash to Thailand without fees, depending on where you friend is from, they might be able to get a bank account with debit card back home that refunds ATM fees. In the US Schwab is a good example.

moreta supposedly has plans to be rolling out scanning at
****
. i find it most useful at the train stations and a fair amount of the cannabis shops i’ve been into have a scan that works for moreta. i try to scan a QR whenever i see it, even if im not paying that way, just to see if it’s eligible to be used in the future.
