TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, it is possible to open a Thai bank account with a DTV visa, but the process can be challenging. Many users recommend using an agent to facilitate the account opening due to varying requirements across banks and potential reluctance from bank staff to assist DTV visa holders. Some have reported success by presenting additional documentation, such as a property contract if they own property, or having a Thai friend assist in the process. Overall, while it can be done, enlisting the help of an agent is often advised to avoid complications.

Absolutely use an agent! It is worth the little it costs not to have go through all the aggravation! Give Mark at One Stop in Pattaya a call. Even if you decide to do it on your own, you’ll see what all your options are so you can make the best choice.

I have an account with K Bank from a previous time when I worked in Thailand. The account is still active and there is some balance in it. I need to obtain a new bank card. If I go on a tourist visa would they issue me with a new bank card and let me use the account?

I had no issues updating my Bangkok Bank to get a new card, still had $$$ in the account. The bank will need your current card, your bank book if they issued one ( I have a bank book with BKK bank ) your Passport and have a Thai phone 📱 number, will make everything a lot smoother. Best of luck.

If you have the correct documents and a Thai friend that banks in that branch you are a good chance. Bank account is not a big deal. Talk politely and explain you are living and working in Thailand and a bank account is a requirement to allow you to buy stuff you also need the bank app set up on your phone the bank officer will do that for you. Remember you are not in your country the bank teller is not following your requests. Bank staff in Thailand have a higher social standing, treat them as such and you may be surprised

I've given up walking in banks and went with an agent instead

YES, you can. Use the immediate service of an agent, though. Or you will be hitting up 50+ Thai banks that will refuse opening an account for you on a DTV

as of now 2 known ways

1) use an agent

2) Buy a condo /apartment property , bring the property contract with your passport to a bank. Banker would be more than willing to assist you. 🙃🙃

Do you have to give Power of Attorney to hire an agent to open a bank account? Someone mentioned he got swindled of his savings. Especially if the contract was written in Thai

@Randy *****
no. The agent isn't opening the account for you. They are just facilitating you being able to open one

Depends where you are in the country. Cheapest seems to be Pattaya. Probably circa 5k. Bangkok and Phuket probably more like 8-10k.

Put a post up in a forum related to where you will actually be and see what the going rate is for there.

That's between you and the bank. But most people have reported that the banks will not give any special preferences to a DTV holder as it's just a tourist visa. You'll likely need to use an agent to help you open one.

You can open a bank account on a DTV. The hard part is finding a branch manager that will let you.

The specific documents needed will vary from branch to branch and also depend on your nationality.

Many people just find it easier to use an agent to open an account.
