TLDR : Answer Summary
The conversation discusses the challenges of opening a Thai bank account with a DTV visa, a tourist visa that does not qualify for an account. Several comments clarify that it is impossible to open an account under this visa type and suggest that obtaining a long-term visa would be necessary to become eligible. Alternatives like online banking services (e.g., Revolut or Wise) are also mentioned as potential solutions.

Yes.

You simply change to a real long term visa, then you will be eligble for at Thai bankaccount.

DTV is a tourist visa, and not entitled to get a bankaccount

You can't. DTV is a tourist visa and tourists can no longer have bank accounts in Thailand

Anonymous participant 287 There's no tourist visa over one year. Banks will only open accounts on non-immigrant visas

It’s not difficult with the Ed plus (non-ed) visa

Only the normal Ed visa is it impossible

You can't, and even if you could (through an agent or by luck), it may not last for long.

What's the point of having a thai bank account? Isnt using revolut or wise sufficient living in thailand? Or what other benefits do you get from opening a thai bank account that revolut and wise cant do? Is it to be able to do the scan to pay features?

lol, and what if Revolut or Wise or any other 'fancy' online payment / banking system is not available where you're from? Well, you're screwed, unless you have a Thai bank account. Your solutions apply to your case, obviously.

well at least in my case, i do. But of course that could be the case for some. Either way, to me its more a form of protection towards what if they choose to freeze my funds. Which they can easily do, it can happen with any bank of course, but with the thai banks this is happening very actively now. So i would much rather keep bigger amounts of capital at a place like revolut or wise than in the local thai bank accounts as they are under strict scrutiny right now and get frozen.

agree, but in most cases (all?), frozen account owners can still get their money by going to their bank and showing their ID. At least, that money is not lost / kept by the bank. Of course, you'd have to be in Thailand to solve this problem.

gotta wait for a few weeks, you cannot access your money right away if its frozen, coming to the branch in person does not change a thing

even if you got everything you still have to wait for your case to be reviewed which can take weeks. Its not just falang. Thais also are under scrutiny.

yes right, fair enough. Thank you for your input! 😊 But ive heard that tourists generally are not allowed to get a thai bank account? Is that right? And that those that did anyway basically got their accounts frozen..? Some even multiple times ive heard. So keep cash handy for emergencies i guess. 😅

Got my very first Bangkok Bank account, many years ago, under a simple visa exemption stamp (not even a visa then), but maybe it was facilitated, at that time, by the fact I was buying some condos. I later opened more bank accounts, at some other banks, through a 'Privilege visa'. None have been closed so far.

scan payments, easy local transfers to friends, local prices on streaming services, fewer fees (ATM fees on foreigner cards are insane)

Participante anónimo 139 you can do all of that with TrueMoney. Even sending money to local bank accounts. And also pay local prices for YouTube, Netflix, Disney+ etc.

You have to top up true money, and if you don’t have a local bank account you have to do it with cash. Can’t you just stop trying to convince people that there is no benefit in having a thai bank account?

Participante anónimo 468 I'm not trying to convince anybody of anything. The OP was asking on how to send money easily to Thai accounts without having one, so that's why I mentioned TrueMoney. And although for sending money you do need to top up with cash, for making purchases you don't need to. I just linked with home country card with it, and it works well.

For me, specifically, a bank account would be less useful than TrueMoney, because I DON'T earn money in Thailand, so to top up the bank account, I'd still need cash 🤷🏻

With TrueMoney I can pay with my card.

It’s a wallet that you can use to pay cash less in 7-11, and also scan to pay at other places. But obviously you have to top it up and if you don’t have a thai bank account you have to do it with cash.

Not like Wise or Revolut. It's a local Thai fintech app that allows to make both online payments and QR codes. It has more functions, such as loans, but those are only for Thai nationals. With the app, you can pay at any Thai QR place, or send money to any Thai Bank account. You can also receive money from any other user as well.

Of course you don’t need it to live here, but it’s very convenient and you save on fees. There are plenty of work arounds but they can’t replace the convenience of having a local bank account.
