TLDR : Answer Summary
A US passport holder is inquiring about leaving Thailand for a day trip to Vietnam as a strategy to obtain a new 45-day visa stamp after an existing COVID extension expires. The community advises ensuring compliance with the immigration requirements, including proof of onward travel, adequate funds, and lodging. However, there is caution regarding the method of travel, suggesting that returning to Thailand by air may not be viewed favorably by passport control, and using land travel may be a more discreet option.

Deleted that earlier comment of mine, definitely use a company and bounce out and back by land.

The fly out and back in is not gonna fool passport control, they will know well and good you didn't go to Vietnam for just a day, you went so you could get back in on a new stamp

Especially if you have a bunch of COVID extensions in your passport. IOs are on the lookout for similar passports and people get refused re-entry. IO will let you in, outright refuse you, or try to find reasons to refuse you. Have the three things like Tod suggested. You'll have them if the IO asks for them. Good luck.

All you can do is meet the "3-proofz"

-proof of onward travel (within the number of days you'll be stamped in for),

-proof of 40K baht or the equivalent in CASH (20K per person, 40K per family)

-proof of lodging

Have those and hope for the best. There's no much else you can do

definitely would be easier entry wise as those visa run companies have already "greased the wheels" at the border so you can get out and back in.
