Apologies if this has been asked before but I have only just joined the group. I have a UK passport so I have Visa exemption for one month. How long can I extend for whilst in the country? Is it just 30 days? Would I need to show evidence of a ticket leaving the country when that time elapses. Also how long would I need to leave the country for before I came back to Thailand? im in Chiang Mai. Many thanks in advance.

TLDR : Answer Summary
If you have a UK passport and initially entered Thailand under the visa exemption program for one month, you can extend your stay for an additional 30 days at the immigration office for a fee of 1900 baht. After this extension, you must leave the country. You do not need to remain outside of Thailand for any specific period before re-entering; however, you are limited to two 30-day visa exempt entries per calendar year by land. If needed, you can also apply for a single-entry tourist visa at a Thai consulate in a neighboring country.

okay and on that note I believe that the O/P knows they can get a 30 day extension for 1900baht at what ever immigration office they use

Good Luck

You can extend a 30 day visa exempt entry ONCE by 30 days at the immigration office in your area for 1900baht, then you need to leave the country.

You don't need to be outside the country any amount of time, (as in you can turn around and come right back in on a new 30 day visa exempt entry if you want to) BUT know you can only get TWO 30 day visa exempt entries by land in a calendar year. Ther eis no official limit to the number you can get flying in.

You could also go to a thai consulate in a nearby country and BUY a single entry tourist visa

very few people are rejected for a 30 day extension :/ AND if you're rejected on a 30 day extension on a 30 day visa exempt entry stamp they have to sell you the 7 days get out of thailand extension denied stamp. That's how the laws are written.

Tod Daniels you completely right but the problem is the Immigration officer. Even you have all the documents and follow the rules, you can be reject. I think immigration must clarify the rules about visa exemption and tourist visa. Example: no more than 1 or 2 tourist visa per year...

You can extend 30 days and then 7 days... After you must to leave.

no worries, many people probably think the same thing. :)

Yeah I realise the mistake I made by explaining that. You can delete the comment as it's not relevant

@Jake *******
you are confusing a couple things,

You came in on a 30 day visa exempt then got a 30 day extension, THEN you left and got a single entry tourist visa and when you came in on that you were stamped in for 60 days, AND you extended that ONCE for 30 days too.

Each of your entries was only extended for 30 days ONCE per entry.

I came for 1 month from the UK then got another month extension. I then went back home for 2 weeks and applied for another 2 months. That expired yesterday and they still gave me another month here so you couldn't be more wrong
Tod *********
that 7 days is not really an 'extension', it's an "application for extension denied" stamp that gives you a week to get out of thailand. AND it costs the same as a 30 day extension 1900baht.

how about stating WHERE in thailand you are?
