TLDR : Answer Summary
You cannot switch directly from a Non-B visa to a Non-O retirement visa while in Thailand. However, if you have an extension of stay based on employment, you can change that extension to one based on retirement provided you meet the necessary requirements. This requires properly cancelling your current extension and applying for a new one, including necessary documentation and proof of funds. It is important to distinguish between visas and extensions of stay in this context.
NON-O RETIREMENT VISA RESOURCES / SERVICES
  • Go to the Retirement Visa Section for information on requirements, including age restrictions, financial requirements, and necessary documentation.
  • For immediate assistance, contact Thai Visa Centre directly via LINE at @ThaiVisaCentre or Email them.
  • Explore recent discussions by using the Non-O Retirement Visa tag in the search box at the top of the page.

If you are inside Thailand and have an Extension of Stay from Immigration (like example) you can switch to another reason why this Extension of Stay is based on.

There is a difference, but I understand. Everything in your passport is a Visa. So trying to help Chris Walker. If you entered Thailand using a Visa (like example picture) you can not switch at Immigration Office.

and I would say we're done.

Okay, first off the answer is NO you cannot go from one VISA type to another VISA type inside the country (except for going from a tourist visa to a Non-Immigration visa).

What you can do is go from an extension of stay for one reason to an extension of stay for another reason.

People routinely interchange and confuse the words VISA and EXTENSION OF STAY. They are not the same at all.

So if you are on the initial 90 day entry of a single entry Non-B visa OR if you are on ANY 90 day entry of a year-long, multi-entry Non-B visa (where you bounce out and in every 90 days) NO you can't get an extension based on retirement. You would need to get a new Non-O visa.

Now on the chance you're on an extension of stay based on employment (that you get from the immigration office or 1900baht) you CAN change the reason for your extension form employment to being over 50 (retirement).

You get a paper from your company saying you are stopping work on xxx day, you go to the immigration office CANCEL your current extension of stay based on employment and immediately apply for a NEW yearly extension of stay based on being over 50 (retirement) by meeting the criteria for that extension.

It most definitely CAN be done just like I outlined, BUT it takes having all your documents and proof of funds together for the new yearly extension, BEFORE you go cancel the old one based on employment.

, Is it possible vice versa? I mean - having a Non-O and an extension based on retirement and convert the extension to be based on employment, without applying for a Non-B?

If you are on the original Visa you bought at a Thai Consulate you can NOT switch to a Non Immigrant O visa based on being over 50 years inside Thailand.

@Robert ******
thank you for the advice

Than just take a look at the website of Thai Consulates in the area, and apply directly there for the Non Immigrant O visa and leave Thailand just before or on 3rd o March.

Yes, if you mean that the visa is valid for 3 months and you have to use it in these 3 months to enter Thailand to get a 60 day Admitted to Stay. But than it is still depending on your Immigration Office if they can convert your visa or not. Till when is your Admitted to Stay date? And when do you become 50 years of age? And which office are you planning to use?

If you mean change from an extension based on work to an extension based on marriage, the answer is yes - that's what I did. Didn't have to leave the country, just gave them the certificate I got from the labour office that stated I had left me job, along with all the other documents required for an extension based on marriage.

Potential follow up question - yes, I still got a work permit while staying on the marriage extension when I got another job

Sorry, I just realised I misread the original comment last night - for some reason I thought it said 'non-b to non-o' (rather than specifically marriage).

I am on a non B visa with a promise of a work visa but it looks like my job will finish before I get the full work visa. I want to swap to a retirement visa as I am 50 next month. It's a nightmare cause I thought this job would happen but it may not. I just want to retire and not work
