What are the challenges of obtaining a Thai 60-day visa and entering Thailand with multiple previous entries?

They sent me to the IDC and asked me to buy a flight back. I was in the IDC for approximately 23 hours. My passport wasn't stamped. I've been on tourist visas for approximately 2.5 years, so it was obviously going to cause/generate suspicion.

I was recently denied entry with 20K+ in cash, and a confirmed onward booking (fully paid for). I had a valid tourist Visa from the Thai Embassy in KL as well. I'm currently back in my country and awaiting the necessary documents to apply for an ED Visa.
