I have 5+ months left of my current extension, which I then assume needs to be canceled before applying for extension based on marriage. Surely this can be done in the same process (or day) at immigration?

Thanks. I'm aware of all the documents, already compiling an arsenal of everything we need or might need. Are you saying that I would need to proactively CANCEL my current extension (work permit) BEFORE applying for extension based on marriage?
