Hi. I am planning to apply for marriage visa, and have one question: If I currently have a non-B visa (work+permit), do I need to convert this to non-O visa prior to applying?

TLDR : Answer Summary
If you currently have a non-B visa and are planning to apply for a marriage visa in Thailand, you do not need to convert your non-B visa to a non-O visa beforehand. Instead, you will change the reason for your extension of stay from employment to marriage. It is advisable to check with your local immigration office for the specific documents required for applying for a marriage-based extension.

No you wouldn't be getting ANY new non-O visa

and

I would bet you're not on any Non-B visa now 😮 and that if you read your stamp it'd say "extension of stay permitted until" and have a date.

All you're doing is changing the reason for your extension from one based on employment to one based on marriage.

Make sure you go to your immigration office and get the hand out listing all the document requirements for the yearly extension based on marriage so you can cancel your extension based on employment and immediately apply for the new one based on marriage to a thai

Thanks. I'm aware of all the documents, already compiling an arsenal of everything we need or might need. Are you saying that I would need to proactively CANCEL my current extension (work permit) BEFORE applying for extension based on marriage?

I plan to use bank statement 400k+

most people who continue to be employed (and are just changing the reason for their extension) wait and do it when their current employment extension is running out (their yearly renewal)

I’ll be staying with the same employer for a short while at least. It’s our own company but we want to close it.

Ok. And would I “cancel my extension of stay based on employment” at the same time I apply for extension based on marriage?

, If you apply for a new extension before the normal window of application for a new 1-year extension, yes, you do.

But when you are in the window of the standard period of your next 1-year extension, from 30 days (or 45 days depending on the IO) before and until the due date of the current extension, you can just apply for a new 1-year extension based on marriage. <- this is the 'changing reason for an extension'. You don't have to apply for cancellation officially for this.

I have 5+ months left of my current extension, which I then assume needs to be canceled before applying for extension based on marriage. Surely this can be done in the same process (or day) at immigration?

Are you going to keep working with the same employer after changing the reason for your extension or quit working?

Those might cause of the differences of required documents for your process

, You cancel your extension of stay based on employment, not a work permit, then apply for an extension based on being married to a Thai. You are allowed to stay by the 'permitted to stay until' stamp, not by your work permit. Those are different documents. Your work permit let you work legally in Thailand but the work permit itself doesn't let you stay in Thailand.
