One last question is, have they shut down any travel within Thailand to the southern islands? Here in Bali today they just closed all access to the Gili Islands... Heard anything like this?

So the takeaway is as of now I can arrive with my US passport and no prearranged visa and be cleared for 30 days, then extend within the country for another 30 days. Priceless information. Thank you! I probably wont be able leave here for another 3 days or so so I would love any updates in thw meantime if this changes.

 yes Ive had the same thought and trying to discern if its actually necessary or not and also how long that process would take. Since things keep changing everyday it seems necessary to act fast and i wouldnt want my visa tied up in Denpasar for a long time. Do you know how long it would take to get that done here?

 thank you but i am confused. If i just show up with my passport i will be given a 30 day visa exempt entry which can be extended for 30 days? And they are currently still issuing these to US citizens? But its not called a visa on arrival, instead its called a visa exemption? Just to be clear that I am understanding you correctly.
