What should my friend consider if resigning from their job on a Non B Visa with an extension of stay?

"I have a friend who is on an Extension of Stay, on a Non B Visa, with Valid Work Permit.  This friend is NOT a teacher. The extension of stay expires September 5th.  Their Work environment has gotten unbearable.  And they are contemplating resigning from their job. Can anyone give me solid advice on if this falls under the Amnesty?  And does anyone have advice on being able to stay legally until its safe to return home or find other employment elsewhere?
