Will immigration in Thailand accept a 90-day onward flight with a 60-day tourist visa if I plan to extend my stay?

Hi everyone,

My plan is to get a 60 day tourist visa with the intention of getting the 30 day extension to stay for 90 days on that visa. So I want to book my flights with a return date close to 90 days later. Will immigration be ok with this if I tell them I intend to get the extension?

Thanks.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The original poster seeks advice on whether they can enter Thailand on a 60-day tourist visa while having a return flight scheduled for 90 days later, as they intend to apply for a 30-day extension. Community responses emphasize that the requirements for obtaining a visa and entering Thailand may differ, and passports are generally checked at various points in the travel process. It was mentioned that immigration typically does not ask for a return flight at entry, but it's crucial to meet airline and consulate expectations.

They will probably see, and ask you why…. Just prepare the right answer. My extension expires one month before my return ticket…. I answered, that I needed to renew my extension. Valid answer=easy fix.

I arrived on a 1 way ticket too

My mate arrived on the new visa system with a one way ticket.didnt have a problem. Maybe he was lucky

as far as I know from older Tourist Visa applications - they might be similar now in the E-Visa system. You NEVER had to fill out a return flight in the visa application form. ONLY the flight down to Thailand. And I doubt that the E-Visa system has altered the form in whatsoever that you must fill in both flights. We need clarification on this!

I emailed Thai Embassy in Sydney and they said I did not need to show a return flight .

I arrived Thailand December 21 and was not asked to show return flight at any stage of my journey

did you apply for a visa in Australia or get 30 days on arrival?

I got a 60 day visa in Australia

don't you have to enter your flight details on the visa application?

I only entered the flight Sydney to Bangkok

If you are unsure, do as I did, email Sydney embassy

Allow 2 days for an answer

I applied for visa online, was approved within 2 days

Posted passport and all required documents to Sydney in Express Post bag and also sent return Express post bag , addressed by myself, one week all returned

Don’t forget $60 money order !

Okay there are THREE possible places where you 'could' have a problem with onward travel dated out further than you will be stamped in for (like a 90 day onward travel on a 60 day tourist visa)

1 - when you BUY the tourist visa from the consulate

2 - when you get the Thai Pass from the MFA

3 - when you check in with your airline.

IF you're able to do all of those things, you will not have any issue when you stamp IN to thailand at passport control when you land.

I had the same question. Thai consulate in NYC said I needed 60 day return and change the flight and get the extension in Thailand. I explained to her the issue of change fees and she shrugged her shoulders. I won't have to worry about change fees because I'm using miles, but it's still a pretty doofy system. Also, the E-Visa site requires evidence of a 60 day return I believe.

As Benjamin stated in the comment above, the requirements for you to obtain a visa/e-visa at the consulate/embassy outside Thailand and the requirements for you to enter Thailand or apply for an extension are similar but different.

I am planning the same visa and 30 day extension, I rang the embassy in Canberra and the lass there said it would be no problem.

@Bernie ******
The embassy in Canberra is correct. However, remember though, visas issued outside of Thailand are granted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Visas issued inside Thailand and all extension of stays are issued by the Immigration Office. These two offices do not communicate with each other.

thanks for your clarification, I was concerned about my visa application and having the return fare for 90 days instead of 60, the 90 day visa is more involved with AFP criminal history check $50 and 2 different insurances needed, 1 for medical treatments and outpatient also 1 for Covid up to $

what 90 day visa? A non-o based on retirement?

I have this visa. Onward flight for 90 days. Airline didn’t ask for it to be 60. No issues at all.

Never had issue at immigration. Only had problem with checking in to the flight at airports, in which case I just bought a fully refundable business class ticket to show the airline and had it refunded afterwards.

You're not going to be telling immigrations anything 😮 That's not who sells you the tourist visa 😕 you apply for the tourist visa in the thai consulate in your country before you come here and they are the ones that will either approve your plan of onward travel 90 days out or tell you that you need it within the 60 days your visa will give you.

Once you get the visa, check in & board the plane here you won't have any problems at passport control when you stamp in with your onward travel being 90 days out

it's a problem. If the airlines are not familiar with the visa options they will demand you buy another onward ticket at 60 days.

are there any cases that you know of where someone can get a stamp without any return flight or onward travel, or is that basically impossible? The reason I ask is because I want to get that tourist visa but get a job in country after that, so don't want to book a return flight.

>are there any cases that you know of where someone can get a stamp without any return flight or onward travel, or is that basically impossible

What stamp? The entry stamp INTO Thailand issued at Passport Control, OR an extension of stay stamp at an immigration office.

If it's an entry stamp into Thailand, generally it'll be the airlines who would want to see a return ticket. If it's at passport control, they almost never, ever (as in, 99.999% of the time) ask for a return flight.

I came to Thailand on November 6th on a TR60 visa using the old COE certificate.

They were both approved and I came on a one way flight.

It is as many people say though pot luck if the check in person for your airline wants to see a outbound/return flight. Just make sure you have a method of booking an onward flight there and then.

confirmed, I had no problem with visa - if you initially say you intend to stay 90 days it directs you to apply for a 60 day visa and there is even a pop up telling you that you can apply for a 30 extension.

I had no problem checking in at Manchester.

To be on the safe side I would take a screen shot of the actual visa application to show at check in.

There is anecdotal evidence however in the US airlines have demanded a return within 60 days.

Ah yes, passport control is what I meant. I'll contact the consulate. Thanks.

@Lindsey ******
passport control won't have any issue ONCE you actually get here.

It's getting the visa from the consulate, and getting the Thai Pass approved to enter the country where you might (or might not) have issues. There are reports that people buying tourist visas and getting thai passes had no issues with onward travel 90 days out when they applied, and then there are some that says they needed onward travel within the length of time they were getting stamped in for (60 days)

Good Luck with it , all you can do is try.
