Advice please

I plan to enter Thailand on a 60 day TR ( tourist) visa and the extend for a further 30 days while in Thailand

Question is

Will immigration allow me to enter if my return ticket is 90 days after arrival, or do I need to have return ticket 60 days and then pay the airline to change the date

Hope this is not too confusing

TIA

🙏🙏

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post seeks advice on entering Thailand on a 60-day tourist visa with a 90-day return ticket. Community responses highlight that airlines may deny boarding if the return ticket does not match the visa duration, although immigration officers at entry might not ask for proof of onward travel. Suggestions include booking a 60-day return to avoid complications, as experiences vary widely depending on the airline and the individual immigration officer. Users also mention alternatives such as renting onward tickets.

There are three things at play here

1 - The tourist visa you're buying (which may or may NOT require you to show proof of onward travel when you apply)

2 - The Certificate of Entry/Thai Pass that you get (which may or may NOT require you to show proof of onward travel when you apply)

3 - The immigration officer you meet at passport control (who will NOT ask at all about proof of onward travel)

I think we've taken this topic about as far as we can. Sadly there is no uniformity between the thai consulates scattered around the globe. Good luck to one and all on your endeavor to get back into thailand (y)

For the last 6 years I have entered on a tr visa and stayed for 4 or 5 months, never had a problem only once did the check in question me so just told him I can extend my visa and take a trip to cambodia(pre covid)

Hi this is what I want to do in November, how do I apply for a 60 day tourist visa I didn't see that option on the Thai Embassy in London website?

@Rich ********
I am also having problems where to apply for any visa. The Thai Embassy website has no links. I'm planning to go in 3 week till April and want to do the stv I've seen mentioned by at a complete loss of where to start!

I've tried calling the embassy but can't get though to anyone. Go on ext 5505 and get cut off

There was an example of a guy coming from the states last week. He had all the right docs, an approved CoE but his flight out was for 90 days after arrival. The airline refused him boarding until he booked a ticket out within the inital validiry of his visa. As he had got there late due to traffic thet closed boarding before he could get on.

So its just hit & miss. I've been asked pre covid when coming on a visa exemption from Sri Lanka, but i also came in 4 other times without being asked i was also asked when I came in on my STV this time.

I’ve done that for many years (pre COVID ) and never had a problem, don’t know now right enough but will be going next month and doing trying the same

All I was trying to point out was

IF you get the COE/Thai Pass approved (and IF you get to check in with the airlines) with onward travel 90 days out that they will not have any issues stamping in here in thailand at passport control.

The airline MAY deny boarding if your return flight does not match your visa. Most airlines are not charging change fees at this time.

The airline could be an issue.

@Rab ****
correct, some airlines require onward travel within the time you're stamped in for

Thanks everyone

I think I will just book a return flight for 60 days to avoid all the confusion

Then change my return flight later

Probably cost couple of hundred bucks, but a lot easier in the long run

A lot of airlines at the moment are allowing free changes.

You can also Google onward ticket and “rent” a real, one-way ticket out of Thailand for $12.

Thanks Kevin

I read about these onward tickets a while back, but had completely forgotten about them

So I can use one these return tickets to get my visa, and also to show the airline when leaving my country ??

@Graeme **********
I just used one for my COE last week. The airline didn’t ask this time but I’ve been asked before.

I changed dates last year twice on a return international flight, $125 AUD each time, direct with the carrier, cost was very acceptable I thought.

@Tod ********
yeah i was refused boarding before because i hadnt got onward travel. After alot of complaining and messing about they made me sign some kind of declaration that if i was refused entry i would personally cover all costs involved.
Darren ********
@Rab ****
what airline was that ?
Tod *********
@Rab ****
right, that's the standard "passenger acknowledges the airpline is not obligated to repatriate the passenger if they're denied entry" waiver so you pay your own way out if you're denied entry here
Bernd ***********
@Tod ********
yep, it's the so called form of indemnity. Airlines use it for many reasons.
Tod *********
IF you get the certificate of Entry or the new Thai Pass approved for entry with a flight out 90 days from your arrival you won't be questioned by passport control at all when you stamp in .
Gerald ********
I came in January on a tr and had no probs with my return flight exceeding the 60 days
Pauly *****
@Tod ********
if it’s not approved he will be required to pay to change the ticket twice.
Tod *********
@Pauly ****
, they can get the ticket for 60 days out, get the coe/thai pass approved and then change it

OR there are reports that onward travel is not always required on tourist visas (it's consulate dependent)
