Why Do DTV Holders Want to Open a Bank Account So Badly?
DTV is basically a long-term holiday visa. You are not allowed to work, and you must leave Thailand every 6 months. Thailand simply makes your stay easier and longer through additional verification under the DTV scheme.
Opening a bank account usually requires a work permit, or another type of visa that allows it (such as a marriage visa, etc.).
So if you want a bank account, apply for a visa category with higher qualifications or one that legally allows bank account access. Simple.
A bank account is a very important financial tool nowadays. If banks do not open accounts carefully, they can easily be abused for online scams or money laundering. That is why the bank account opening process is strict.
If DTV holders are not allowed to open bank accounts, then that means they are not allowed. Please stop looking for loopholes or “special methods” to force it, because it only creates problems for bank employees who are trying to follow regulations properly.
You can still:
1. Use your credit card for monthly grocery shopping
2. Exchange larger amounts of foreign currency weekly to reduce exchange fees
3. Withdraw cash from ATMs once a week in medium to large amounts to minimize withdrawal fees
4. Use payment scanning apps like TAGTHAI or other apps for QR payments. Many already support PromptPay scanning. Even my home country’s mobile banking app can scan PromptPay here. Alipay works too.
Once again: DTV is a long-term holiday visa with many conveniences, but also with limitations — including bank account restrictions.
Please respect the rules.
After all, when applying for a DTV, you already needed to maintain 500,000 THB in your account for 3–6 months. That should mean your level of financial maturity and common sense is already reasonably developed.
