Why does this visa require you leave the country every 6mo?

I assume that is so they can deny you entry, ie kick you out without having to find you and depart you, if they decide to change the rules

TLDR : Answer Summary
The DTV visa, or Digital Nomad Visa, typically requires holders to leave Thailand every 6 months or apply for an extension at an immigration office. This requirement is intended to differentiate it from long-term visas and discourage misuse as a replacement for full residency. Some users mentioned that exiting the country can provide a chance for travel, and they expressed the idea that this arrangement is ultimately a beneficial option for those who want flexibility while living in Thailand. Additionally, there are discussions about the visa's affordability and how it compares to other long-term options.

It's to deter people like you.

Why bother, that’s the way it is.

You are free to choose another visa, that suits you better.

It is aimed at digital nomads, who by definition, only stay short time every place.

If wanting to stay longtime / permanent there are much better visa’s for that, than a tourist visa.
Anonymous ******************
Simple, Don’t come!

With that attitude you will be miserable
Luit *****************
Because it is NOT a visa for people who want to LIVE in Thailand.
Andrew ********
@Luit ****************
but it actually is.
Henrik *****
DTV is defined as a Tourist visa, not for permanent residency.
Andrew ********
@Henrik ****
you can still “ live here” though .
Luit *****************
@Andrew *******
It is not, some people try to use it that way.
Anonymous ******************
People just trolling. If you have done your research rather than posting bs, its a Tax thing
Luit *****************
Anonieme deelnemer 988 nothing to do with tax.
Anonymous ******************
@Luit ****************
another misinformed that doesnt research. Do you have the DTV? If a foreigner stays in country for more than 180 days then they are subject to tax and since its a tourist visa.
Luit *****************
Anonieme deelnemer 988 what a ridiculous conclusion! Why should I be misinformed and not do research? You simply cannot think in a logical way. The fact that 180 days in Thailand make you tax resident has in no way any relation with the normal stay of maximum 180 days. It prevents in no way that you become tax resident, when that should be the purpose then they should have made the stay 179 days, because 180 days already is enough to become tax resident, so only a single stay is enough. And because DTV is multi entry, it is very easy to stay at least 180 days in a calender year. In other words, your arguments are just BS!

not worth your time arguing with him. Like trying to play chess with a pigeon!

Anonymous participant 988 having to leave at some point (not necessarily 6 Months) literally has nothing to do with tax! What are you on about?
Cliff *********
What a ridiculous attitude.
Anonymous ******************
It's a 5 year visa for only 10k baht. They have to have some reason to buy the elite visa. 😂
Dror *********
Never saw such a dumb person jumping to conclusions and assuming things by his own
Trikker **********
You don't need to leave Thailand every 6 months but atleast every 12 months, but with all the paperwork you need to extend 6 months on IO and you need live up to all requirements again when extend at IO. Much easier to use 1 day fly out and in again same day on a cheap plane or do a border run. I would anytime leave Thailand 1 day to get rid of paperwork and all the requirements you had when applied for your dtv visa.
Don *******
It’s really not that big of a deal.

My only problem is how many stamps I’m getting for leaving every 3 weeks
Anonymous ******************
You don’t realise how much of an improvement this visa is from a few years ago 🙄 where’d you have to pay 900k baht for elite visa. So ungrateful

Not many countries allow you stay 5 years consistently without citizenship

Try go and live in America where they only allow 6 month per year and even then only for a few select certain nationalities

Be so grateful you are allowed to live in the paradise that is Thailand

You're not required to leave the country; you can go to the immigration office and extend for six months. But yes, every six months, you must either extend or leave the country to activate another six months. I have gone in and out of the country probably like eight or nine times with no issues. As long as your paperwork is in check and you can prove all the things you said when you applied, then there will be no issues. I have not been questioned once yet, but if I was, then I can prove everything with no issues. I leave the country because it gives me a chance to explore other countries too, instead of just paying 10k to extend. Hope that helps!
Greg ********
@Khun ****
it is 1900 THB to extend - not 10k
Anonymous ******************
It’s just to not be a replacement for a full visa.

It’s a relatively cheap and easy visa to get. They can archive the benefits they want to the country without cannibalising other visas.
Andrew ********
Stop whining. Go explore se Asia.
Anonymous ******************
Catch those not following the rules. I see many people working within Thailand on DTV and not hiding it. If want a business get a business visa.

Anonymous participant 354 See quite a few of these - advertising their services within Thailand. Just needs a Thai with a broken rice bowl.

It’s the visa requirement that’s why

Plus you can leave as often as you please you are not handcuffed to 6 months at all

I have left and entered multiple times on the DTV visa and as agreed I’m allowed in with 180days each time.

same. And it's been easy every entry

Ok.. don't apply to that visa then if you think so...

It is as it is.. take it or leave it ka

Wish there was controls in the UK like the Thais have. The UK is being invaded by young Muslim men with no passports or id and get in and are given free hotel full board accomodation, plus £50 a week spending money and free mobiles and other things like free driving lessons etc. Problem is none of this is FREE, the British taxpayers are compulsory paying for it all and British people in some cases go hungry. Thailand have the right principles, look after their own people only, but welcome legal foreign visitors.
AllSabaai ******
@George ******
this is all politics ka , it is same as what happen by USA , The USA taxpayers are paying for the Israelis so they have free education up to class 12 , As well universal health care, new immigrants tax exemption and fund support and housing. And so and so and so , ka
John **********
It's because it's a tourist visa so needs to be differentiated from a long term visa
Marco ***********
It’s probably a mechanism to check on all the softpower courses and cancel their visa if they abuse it.
Siggi *******
@Marco **********
no visa can be cancelled only extensions and any change of rule would only apply for new visas v never ever for existing ones
Luit *****************
@Siggi ******
visa surely can be cancelled when abusing it, but more easily it is just denying entry on a visa when you do not comply with rules, what in effect is the same as cancelling. Entry rules for visitors can change at any moment, regardless of any visa. A visa is not a kind of ticket that gives you unlimited and unconditional access.
Todd *********
@Marco **********
lol.

No restrictions on your attendance or not
Anonymous ******************
@Marco **********
Or to check on fคke digital nomads?
Marco ***********
Anonymer Teilnehmer 934 all the agents helping people abuse the Visa always offer softpower courses 🤷🏼‍♂️
Anonymous ******************
@Marco **********
How is it abuse? You sign up for cooking, muay Thai, dental, medical - all within the criteria for this visa. Those using agents are simply dummies who can't fill in an online form! How about the digital nomads who had to borrow 500k off their mums in order to qualify, so they can sit in internet cafes leeching free WiFi whilst playing games on their computers? 😂😂😂
Luit *****************
Anonieme deelnemer 934 The abuse is when soft power ends and visa is still used. And of course digital nomad can also abuse.
Marco ***********
Anonymer Teilnehmer 934 no need for discussion with people hiding behind anonymity😂
Anonymous ******************
@Marco **********
I'm sorry if the truth hurts. No-one is getting any visa cancelled. Once you've got it, it's yours for five years. Nowhere in the conditions does it state you must attend courses for five years. You must be new in Thailand!
Luit *****************
Anonieme deelnemer 934 Using the visa when the purpose for stay is not valid anymore is just illegal. It is not necessary to state in conditions that you must attend courses for five years. You can stop any moment you want, but then you can not legally use the visa anymore, because it is for a specified purpose of stay. If this will be enforced nobody can tell, but the law about visa is clear about this.
Anonymous ******************
@Luit ****************
The visa is valid for five years. People have already been in and out numerous times and nothing is being enforced. It's a doddle. Best visa ever
Luit *****************
Anonieme deelnemer 934 Indeed only few conditions are enforced. I hope they find not too much irregularities with the current checks, because that might result in more discomfort for genuine visa holders.
Anonymous ******************
Luit *****************
Anonieme deelnemer 934 Why unlikely? When you look around you eiland see more and more changes in Thailand preventing misuse of facilities. Just look at what is going on with bank accounts at the moment.
Anonymous ******************
@Luit ****************
Banking industry has nothing to do with immigration.
Luit *****************
Anonieme deelnemer 934 What is relevant about banking not related to immigration? It is about government policies, not individual organisations.

So in that way both are related, they both have to execute government policies.
Anonymous ******************
@Luit ****************
Government is also responsible for much public transport and airports too. So I guess they impact on visas too?
Luit *****************
Anonieme deelnemer 934 of course government have impact on visa system too, how can you think they have no impact on visa.
Anonymous ******************
@Luit ****************
Yep. Landing slots at Suvarnabhumi impact on visas. Excuse me whilst I ROFL
Luit *****************
Anonieme deelnemer 934 What have landing slots to do with this discussion? You try to be funny?

Of course government might have influence on landing slots, I suppose these are mostly managed inside the company itself.
Anonymous ******************
@Luit ****************
How thick are you? You tried to link banking to immigration which makes as much sense as airport landing slots to immigration.
Sean *******
Anonymous participant 934 He's definitely living off mummy and daddy's money.

You aren't required to exit the country every six months. You can go to an immigration office and extend it for another six months.

You are required to leave Thailand before re-entering after one-year straight in the country.
Joel *******
Anonymous participant 678 Isn't that a one off thing...

You can extend one time per entry - NOT one time in the 5 years validity of the visa.
Jason **********
Because it's a tourist visa?
Johan **************
It's a tourist visa. Not a long term resident visa. And even the latter have to renew every year. They can get denied as well.
Anonymous ******************
@Johan *************
it's a special tourist visa, according to the law
Wannikea *********
It's multiple entry Visa where you're stamped in for 6 months at a time. You can apply for an in-country extension at 180 days, but you would have to bounce out and back after that.
