Does anyone know how to open a bank account with the DTV? Is it possible?
Summary so far
The general consensus among comments is that opening a bank account with a Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) is extremely difficult and often not possible. Several users shared experiences indicating that banks typically require a long-term visa for account creation. While some anecdotal instances suggest that it might be possible under specific circumstances, such as property ownership or through unconventional means, this is not the norm. Many commenters emphasize the importance of seeking alternative solutions like using mobile payment apps (e.g., Wise or local options) instead of traditional banking.

It’s not inherently possible, but if you do the leg work and you look around, you might find something. I’ve never heard of anyone getting good advice but I have heard anecdotal evidence of people just rocking up to random banks and somehow getting it done.
I also have a DTV visa and I found a way to “scan and pay” like I have a bank account by using KBank. They have a “pay and tour” prepaid visa. To use it get the Tag Thai app and it’s called easy pay.
For big purchases and rent I use the WISE app.
Good luck 😊🇹🇭
Between those two things you don’t really need a bank account.
I opened one when I was there on visa exempt entry in December 2023. Everyone said it was impossible back then too. I tried a few banks all around Chiang Mai. I got refused quite a few times. A bank manager told me they are not legally allowed to. Then I tried one bank at Central Airport mall and to my surprise they told me yes no problem!
I just needed to bring a Thai drivers licence, certificate of residence, and two forms of my foreign ID.
I still have the bank account and never had any issues with it.
Things might have gotten more strict since then... but like I said, people were the same thing they're saying now, that it's impossible and don't even bother trying... Just thought I would offer my experience since many people saying it's impossible probably haven't even tried.
Anonymous participant 775 the changes for immigration and banking rules started from the 1st quarter of 2025, Bankok bank were most severe because they had a fraud going including thier own staff.
The biggest hurdle was the Bank of Thailand told the banks they should know thier customers and only give accounts to long term residence,
The banks generally used the visa system as one way of enforcement. Bangkok bank closed many accounts and banking apps at this time.
Other banks allowed people to keep thier accounts even on DTV but without cards and apps,so its a mixed picture.
No you can’t open a account on a DTV visa ,,, even if you use a agent ok yet if you have any banking issues in the future you will have your account locked ,,,,
It's only really possible if you own a property I think. I have a friend on a DTV, he has a fully functional bank account (Bangkok Bank), but he has a Thai wife and owns his condo in Chiang Mai. If you want help here, you need to be more specific and share your circumstances etc. Otherwise you will find that everyone who replies will simply say that it is not possible, which pretty much is true
In theory its possible, in practice its impossible, let me explain.
The bank of Thailand have instructed the Thai banks to only give an account to foreigners who are staying long term in Thailand, most banks now ask for a non o or other long term visa to fulfill that requirement.
What remains open if you can demonstrate another way of showing your a long term residence it might be possible, maybe like ownership of a company or property.
In practice I've never seen anyone trying that route.
