What is the process for extending a DTV visa in Thailand, and what should I be aware of during the application?

Just sharing my experience today at Bangkok Immigration in case it's useful to other DTV holders.

I went in to transfer my DTV stamp into a new passport and also had to pay a fine for a missed 90-day report. The whole process took quite a while, so be prepared for a long day if you're doing both.

What surprised me was when I asked about extending my DTV for another 6 months. As I'm on the business owner/workcation category, I was told I would need to provide quite a substantial portfolio of supporting documents, including:

Business documentation

Bank statements

Invoices

Evidence of ongoing business activity

Proof of 500,000 baht in my bank account for the previous 30 days

The officer then told me that an alternative would simply be to leave Thailand and re-enter, which would avoid the need for the extension application and supporting portfolio.

One other thing worth mentioning: I made the mistake of turning up in shorts. I've been coming to Thailand for 25 years and somehow forgot the importance of dressing smartly when dealing with government offices. The officer was not impressed and gave me a fairly stern lecture about it. Fair enough — lesson learned. Next time it'll be long trousers and a collared shirt.

Just posting this in case it helps anyone else planning a DTV extension in Bangkok. Has anyone else had a similar experience recently?

Answer summary
This post shares a personal experience at Bangkok Immigration regarding the process to transfer a DTV stamp into a new passport and the requirements for extending the DTV visa. The author highlights that significant documentation is needed for the extension, particularly for business owner/workcation holders, including proof of business activity, bank statements, and evidence of sufficient funds. An alternative method mentioned is leaving Thailand and re-entering to reset the DTV stamp. Additionally, the author notes the importance of dressing appropriately when visiting government offices, as they received feedback on their attire during the visit.

"The government is currently drafting the finalized text and coordinating among agencies like the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Immigration Bureau. Until that text passes through the administrative queue and appears in the Gazette, the current 60-day visa exemption remains in place."

When the final text has been approved, it will appear in the Royal Gazette. It will then come into force 15 days later.

I’m leaving for Thailand in 3 weeks and haven’t booked my onward ticket yet, which I need to do now.

When applying for the tourist visa online, should I ( book and state that my intended stay is 30 days or 60 days? My actual plan is to stay for 90 days.

I’m mainly concerned because I’ve heard Thailand may reduce it to 30 days before I travel. If that happens, I’m worried the airline could give me trouble if my onward ticket is dated more than 30 days after arrival.

If you apply for a tourist visa in your home country, you get 60 days.

If you come to stamp in visa on arrival, you get 30 days a few days before the end of your visa, go to immigration and apply for a 30 day extension. It’ll cost you 1,900 and is a bit of a pain in the ass. You’ll have to fill out the forms and provide (I think 2 passport pictures) and pay 1,900 baht.

To avoid lines and confusion it’s better if you apply for a tourist visa at the Thai embassy in your home country.
Duangpen *******
Duangpen *******
Alison Allerton If that time the law is enforced,There are 2 ways for you to choose: 1. Travel to Thailand for free for 30 days and then apply for visa extension at Immigration for another 30 days. 2. Apply for a visa to enter Thailand from the Department of Consular Affairs or the Thai Embassy in your country almost get 60 days.

Duangpen Chong there is a 3rd way, travel to Laos then back in the next day. That should buy you an extra 30 days fresh stamp.
