Why can't I leave my quarantine hotel in Bangkok after a negative PCR test?

Hello everyone,

Finally made it to the Kingdom this morning 🙏

I’m doing my 1 night quarantine hotel in Bangkok and was notified earlier that my PCR test is negative. Unfortunately, the hotel reception says that I can’t leave my room till tomorrow unless I’m checking out to going elsewhere. Can’t even use the pool or hotel gym.

First time I’ve heard of this. Thought I was free to go out and explore tonight.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The original poster is experiencing confusion regarding their quarantine hotel in Bangkok. Despite receiving a negative PCR test, hotel reception informs them they cannot leave their room until the following day unless checking out. Comments from other users indicate mixed experiences with different hotels regarding policies on leaving after a negative result. Some users suggest that restrictions vary by hotel, and others share instances where guests were free to leave after testing negative. It seems that this issue might stem from miscommunication or differences in individual hotel policies.

Guess it up to each hotel

Unless your a liar like some people are saying, because some people are so inteligent they can NEVER be wrong 😂😂😂😂

Try telling the idiots on here

They have an opinion but not the brains to believe they can be wrong

that’s what happened. It was at a more classy hotel so maybe the less expensive ones are more lenient

Order some beers

Hope everything goes well

 I was at the Raddison - Well an Annex to the back of the Raddison
.. Asked for the smallest can of Coke (Same size as a smallest red bull)
.. charged 100 Bhts
.. I don’t do the other coke but would probably be cheaper
. Now my friend., you may have to make your own way to the Airport to travel elsewhere

 Nowhere from Central Bangkok should charge more than 300 Bhts - Kind regards from KHONKAEN

I am in sandbox program, yesterday I checked in on 11:30am and I got my negative result on 5pm then I go out for movie and also take my dinner outside in Bangkok.

I was told I could leave after my negative test but chose to stay the night. They were happy for me to leave the room and also return so went to

and a street market nearby. Not an issue at Miloft Sathorn Hotel. Can’t recommend it though, pretty basic room and meals. 4,200 Baht including everything and the ATK test for later.

What hotel did you stay at?

huh? Didn’t I already write that?

I'd prefer to get a good night's sleep, and travel on next day if negative result.
Ian *********
So IF you have a negative result and you book another night you still cannot leave!, Soon as I got negative result in Phuket I was free to leave and return

VERY ODD
Chris *********************
@Ian ********
if you test negative you can leave when you want pal test and go
Ian *********
@Chris ********************

can’t walk about Bangkok and come back to this room. It’s a one way door. Can check in somewhere else.

sandbox program is different. I’m free to checkout and go anywhere in Thailand now but can’t leave and return to this room since it’s on a floor with other quarantine people.

I got my negative test in the morning, then paid for an additional night. I was free to go out and come back in my room anytime in the quarantined floor.
Ian *********
@David ***
Didnt realize separate floors

That's fair enough tbh

This guy said he was offered to leave the hotel after the negative result came in

@Maya ******
that's true you can after a negative result

I was allowed out in Phuket as soon as I showed them a negative result

All my buddies took there bags and left after 7 hrs just book another hotel
Chris *********************
Because it's a quarantine hotel you can go out of the hotel but not use facilities
Mark *********
My friends checked in, got their test. It was negative. They checked out of the hotel and didn't spend the night even though they had paid their 6 000
Maya *******
@Mark ********
that was 1 expensive test...

Each hotel would have their own rules, but that certainly is a strange one. Once you’ve gotten a negative test then you should be free to travel anywhere, and not even sleep in the hotel if you didn’t want to. Probably best to ask to speak to a manager and confirm their policy. It’s probably a lowly desk clerk telling you that rule and they don’t really know their stuff.

he said, I can’t leave my room til tomorrow “unless I’m checking out”

You can’t leave your quarantine hotel and come back after dinner and stay in the vicinity of people waiting for test results

My hotel told me the same thing when I got my test back at 6pm, so I checked out
Larry ***********
@Jared *********
The same thing they told me even if you have a negative test. They don"t want you wondering around and become infected with Covid as when you check out you get a certificate stating you tested negative for Covid
Jared **********
@Larry **********
yea there’s at least a little bit of sense or reason to the policy so I didn’t question it, just said thank you and left.
Micah ********
@Jared *********
With "Exemption from Quarantine (aka Test & Go)", it's 1 night OR negative result. You should be free to venture out now. Sadly, it sounds like the hotel doesn't have accurate information, but maybe their own process it different with their certificate.

I’m free to check out and find another hotel. It’s not a tragedy. Besides, it’s dark out and not a whole lot to do tonight anyway
Jared **********
@Micah *******
I was free to venture out
.but you just couldn’t return

And no one seems to have a did I notice answer or source for it being a rule or a hotel policy, which if it is then multiple hotels are using it.

checking out means you’re forfeiting the night stay you’ve paid for. I’ll chill here and tough it out till the morning. Have a great stay.
Jared **********
@David ***
yea I know what it means, mine was exactly the same. After doing 15 nights last year you wouldn’t think one night would be so bad, but after sleeping all day I said fuck it and checked out. Went out for a nice dinner and got a couple errands done.

Now to just see what happens with some of restrictions.

I’m jealous of your proper dinner. Mine just arrived in a meal prep container and nowhere near filling. Not an American portion!! Couldn’t have done 15 night of this. Don’t know how you survived.
Stuart *********
@Jared *********
How could you possibly be in the vicinity of people waiting for their results. They’d be in their room. Weird but as I said each item have their own rules. It may be a government ruling but it’s the first time I’ve seen a post about it.
Jared **********
@Stuart ********
i checked in with someone else, walked to my own room in what was clearly an area where other people were in the test and go, just didn’t seem that strange to me that being a “quarantine program” that coming and going, even after your test result might not make that much sense.

It definitely wasn’t anywhere near the same level of caution as coming in last year for the full 2 weeks

@Stuart ********
thanks for the input. According to reception staff it’s the government policy since this is technically a 1 night quarantine. Not a big sacrifice but seems odd. I’m free to leave but have to check out if I do.
Frédéric ******************
@David ***
If it was a 1 night quarantine, they wouldn't allow you to check out... 😂 This clerk didn't have a clue.
Jeffrey *********
@Frédéric ****************
And if it were a one night quarantine, the government wouldn't repeatedly and consistently refer to it as "exemption from quarantine". The official announcements have all stated pretty clearly that your obligation to remain in lockup ends the minute you get the negative result... My suspicion is that the hotel doesn't feel confident that it can differentiate between "negative testers going out for a walk" and "folks waiting for results sneaking out", so they've made up their own rule and blamed it on the government.

In my case, the floor was locked for the lift access. The clerk had to update my card so I could unlock the lift with it.

you’re right. 1 night should oblige me to stay till the morning but wasn’t the case. No big loss, I’m here 3 months.
