Not getting a clear answer from embassy here so I'll ask you all. For many years I've stayed in Thailand with my thai family for about 4 months each time. I've always entered on a single entry tourist visa, extended 30 days and then extended a further 60 days with my marriage papers. I am now preparing my next visit in July. What visa should I be applying for right now? Or do I stick with single entry tourist visa?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user has historically used a single entry tourist visa to stay in Thailand for approximately 4 months, extending their stay with marriage papers. They are seeking advice on whether to continue with the single entry tourist visa or consider alternative visa options for their upcoming visit in July. Comments suggest that while the single entry visa is still available, applying for a 90-day Non-O visa might also be a feasible option.

How does it work to extend a SETV with marriage papers?

Just curious.

There's a 60 day "visiting Thai family" extension if you are married or have thai children. Generally you can only use it once a year.

. You can only use it once per visa, not once per year. Eg you can have multiple yearly extensions of a visa, but only one 60 day visit family visa. Resets if you get a fresh visa outside Thailand.

I believe it's once per entry rather than once per year.

but can be used only in conjunction with a TV? I ask because I’ll be getting married this trip & would like to weigh my options for any future trips if fiancé cannot secure a visa to US within 6-8 months of my departure.

I believe the visit family extension is available to those who are married to a Thai regardless of how they entered Thailand (visa-exempt entry, Tourist Visa, etc.). You can, however, apply for only one 60-day extension of stay to visit family per entry to Thailand. I think you get to choose when you apply for the visit family extension. In other words, you can first apply for a regular 30-day extension of stay available from a visa-exempt or a Tourist Visa entry. You can then, if it is still available, apply for a 60-day covid extension. After that, you could apply for a visit family extension (60 days). If you wish to stay for the maximum time the visit family extension should probably be the last extension you apply for as it can be applied for at any time during your entry.

i wish I would’ve known about this before I wasted time on a STV. Is there a certain amount of time you have to be married before you can apply for the marriage extension?

It depends on where the marriage took place (Thailand, or outside Thailand) as to what documentation you need to apply for the family visit extension. Inside Thailand is easier. Outside Thailand may require the translation of documents.

I do not believe so, but you need to make sure the marriage is registered at a local amphur office. Generally, you need the following when you apply for the family visit extension:

Married with Thai national with marriage certificate. (signed by both persons)

( Korror 2 and 3 or Korror 22 and foreign marriage certificate)

Signed wife ID card copy

Signed copy house book (Blue Book)

If it's a SETV, you an apply for a 60 day extension of stay based on marriage to a Thai national. IF you are here when the 60 day extension of stay based on unable to travel due to COVID-19 are being sold, apply for that first

You can continue to do the same if it’s always worked I suppose. Why fix something that isn’t broken? Or did you want to stay longer this time?

Single Entry tourist visas are available. If you have the funds you should be able to get a 90 day Non-O from the Embassy though.
