What are the best visa options for staying in Thailand for 6 months with a family?
Hi everyone- I’m up in Chiang Mai with Aus wife & 3 kids on 45 day exemption (day 12). I’m 50, wife not at magic number yet. Thoughts please on best way forward (Visas) to stay at least 6 months.
Answer summary
A user in Chiang Mai, traveling with his Australian wife and three children on a 45-day exemption, seeks advice on visa options to extend their stay to at least six months. A commenter suggests the Non-Immigrant O visa for the user since he is over 50, which allows a 90-day stay and an option to apply for a 1-year extension. The user's family can also apply for the Non-Immigrant O visa as dependents.

You are 50, so you can apply for the Non Immigrant O visa based on being over 50 years of age, get 90 days of stay and apply before ending for the 1 year Extension of Stay.
Wife and kids can apply for the Non Immigrant O visa based on being dependant on a foreigner with long stay in Thailand.

OPThanks Robert for your response - was planning to apply for my Non Imm O & off to open a local bank a/c today in my name. Reading thru info for my wife (& kids) as a dependent - didn’t see a requirement for separate account in her name?

as Dependent on you, they do not need a bank account to apply for a visa or the 1 year Extension of Stay
