Australian going to Bangkok.

Should I be applying for a tourist visa, or can I do the 45 day visa on arrival and extend while I'm there?

TLDR : Answer Summary
An Australian traveling to Bangkok can choose between applying for a tourist visa, which allows for a 60-day stay, or utilizing the visa on arrival for 45 days. Both options permit a one-time extension of 30 days at a local immigration office for a fee of 1,900 THB.

Ok, I'll answer the question.

1. A tourist visa allows a person to stay in Thailand for 60 days.

2. A visa exempt allows a person to stay in Thailand for 45 days. If a person enters AFTER September 30, they will get 30 days.

3. BOTH tourist visas and visa exempts can get ONE 30 day extension of stay based on tourism at the local immigration office for 1,900 THB.

4. The legal process of leaving Australia is OUTSIDE the scope of the group, and any questions or statements about leaving Aus will be removed.

Someone can correct if I'm wrong but I think the 60 day visa would include the 14 days quarantine. So in reality, you would be spending only 45-46 days outside of your hotel quarantine. The situation may change if they decide to reduce the quarantine for fully vaccinated tourists in September or October.

The 60 day tourist visa, and the 45 day visa exempt, includes the period for quarantine. The sandbox is an "island quarantine"
