Hello, is it possible to enter with the visa exemption 30 days and then extend in Bangkok? I have an Australian passport. I am flying in mid-July so am hopeful the 60 day visa exemption might be in effect by then.

TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, as an Australian passport holder, you can enter Thailand with a 30-day visa exemption and then extend your stay for an additional 30 days for a fee of 1900 baht at the immigration office in Bangkok. The recommended location for this extension is IT Square Laksi Plaza. However, considering possible changes to visa rules, such as a potential 60-day visa exemption, applying for a tourist visa in advance via the e-visa process might be a better alternative.

It might be hard to time if the visa exempt 60 days looks like it might happen or might not by the time you travel. But if it looks like it won't happen, getting a tourist visa is a better option. Now that the embassy in Australia has adopted evisa it's all done online. It actually costs less to buy the visa than it does to pay for an extension at the immigration office, and you don't have to spend a day getting the extension either.

thanks for the advice! I saw it asks for proof of accommodation, do you know if all 60 days of accom is required? I don't really wanna book that far in advance

usually just the majority of your accommodation is enough

- I applied for the 60 day visa in April through the Canberra Embassy. I only provided a copy of the first place I was staying at as I was travelling around. Very easy procedure and received the approval for the evisa in about 4 working days. I’ve now extended this for another 30 days at the local immigration office.

, That varies by embassy. Some require you to provide proof of accommodations for the whole period of your itinerary. Some accept for a few days or a week. Did you check the website of the exact Thai embassy/consulate you are applying for your visa?

just submit a few days and if they're not happy with it they will ask you for longer by email. Then you can make a refundable/cancelable booking online in the event your plans change.

As a Aussie you can fly in free stamp entry "visa exempt" (which right now it for 30 days) and extend that one time for 30 more days for 1900baht at the immigration office that serves the area where you stay.

If you are in Bangkok you go to IT Square Laksi Plaza to get a 30 day extension on a visa exempt entry.
