Dear community members,

I am seeking your help and advice regarding the type of visa my husband and I need to deliver our baby in Thailand. My husband is American and over 50 years old, while I am Vietnamese. We are hoping to stay in Thailand for more than 6 months to ensure a safe delivery and proper post-natal care for our new baby.

We understand that we need to apply for a proper visa to ensure a smooth and hassle-free experience. However, we are confused about the type of visa we should apply for.

We would be grateful if anyone who has previous experience or knowledge about visa requirements for non-Thai nationals delivering a baby in Thailand could provide us with some guidance. Specifically, we are looking for information on the types of visa available, their requirements, and application procedures.

Thank you all in advance for your help and support. We appreciate any information or advice you can offer.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user seeks guidance on the appropriate visa for delivering their baby in Thailand, given their plan to stay over six months. Suggestions include applying for a non-O visa based on the husband's age, considering the medical visa, or opting for the METV or SETV visa with potential extensions. Community members recommend contacting the chosen hospital for further assistance on procedures and paperwork.

First, you choose the hospital where you want to give birth. Then, you contact the hospital, and they will guide you through the procedures and help you with the necessary paperwork.

You can apply for the 6 month METV visa with extensions and strategic border bounces you ca. get 9 months out of the visa…

if your husband is ab official resident of Vietnam he can also apply for the METV in Vietnam if not he will have to go back to his passport country(s) or a country he has legal residency in to apply for that visa…

if not he can apply for the 60 day SETV visa with a 30 day extension at your local immigration office for ฿1,900 he can get 90 days in country, then he can go apply for the visa again at an embassy/consulate outside of Thailand…

if not he cab do a land border crossings for 30 day visa exempt stamp with an extension of 30 days at your local immigration office for ฿1,900

You can do 2 land border crossings per calendar year 1 Jan - 31 Dec before it resets

Try for the medical visa

There is a medical visa…I never looked into it:

The medical visa is hard to get.

It's unlikely she could meet the requirements of the Non-O Medical Treatment unless her hospital stay is all arranged -

Medical treatment (longer than 60 days)

Required Document

(Please check relevant embassy/ consulate's website for specifically required documents)

1.Passport or travel document with validity not less than 6 months.

2.Photograph of the applicant, taken within the past six months.

3.Letter of appointment from hospital/medical center.

4.Copy of hospital/medical center registration certificate.

5.Financial evidence, e.g. bank statements, proof of earnings, proof of sponsorship from a third party).

There isn't a visa for it.

Either your husband gets a non-O based on being over 50 and you become his dependent or you get a tourist visa before entering Thailand which is good for 2 months, go down immigration and extend for 30 days then you leave.

She would not get a dependent Visa until the husband is on his 12 month extension and she has to leave to get it, maybe cutting it close with a baby arriving

good point 👍

I do wonder why she just doesn't do this in Vietnam, which is where her profile suggests she lives.

my husband has personal plan to do in Thailand. So we decided to move there. I just want to ask if it’s easy to get long term visa. If it’s difficult, I will deliver baby in Vietnam.

no noticeable differences between the private hospitals from my experience, certainly not Samitivej in BKK and FV in HCMC anyway. Not that I have experience of giving birth in either...

Be honest with you never been to hospital in Vietnam. But did have a preganant wife in Singapore and she went over the top in requirements ended up costing me

dollars and that was 24 years ago lol.

bloody hell, ouch! Private hospitals here are amazing just like in BKK but also treat you like a cash cow especially if you have insurance. Assuming she'll be in a private hospital in Thailand to give birth then it makes no sense to me unless it happens to be considerably cheaper in Thailand compared to the private ones here.
