Hi. I have a bit of a hypothetical question based on the 6 month multiple entry visa. My husband, baby and I would like to move to Chiang Mai, Thailand next year on the 6 month multiple entry visa.

1. Does my 1 year old have to apply for the visa as well?

I also plan on applying for a teaching job when we get there

2. Once I get a teaching job, will I then have to apply for a non immigrant visa? And my baby?

Any information would be greatly appreciated. We are quite confused by this process.

3. What happens to my husband and baby? Does my husband then need to apply for spousal visa?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The query addresses the visa requirements for a family moving to Chiang Mai on a 6-month multiple entry visa (METV). Key questions include whether the 1-year-old needs a visa, the process of switching to a non-immigrant visa upon securing teaching employment, and the visa options for the husband. Responses suggest both parents can enter on METVs with the baby not needing a separate visa as children under 15 are exempt from fines for overstays. Once employment is secured, they can apply for non-O visas for the baby and husband, while extending their stay to match the teaching contract.

Of course IF they come in on a 6 month METV they don't have a gun to their head to get employed as fast as they can

You can wring almost 9 months of stay out of a 6 month METV (in 60 day increments)

where do I get a police check from? I live in Newark Jersey. So do I just go down to the local police and ask them for a background check on me?

American, female, degree, willing to work with kids... If it takes longer than 14 days to find a job she is doing something wrong.

If she doesn't have a degree the point is moot since she won't be getting a non-B or work permit as a teacher in Thailand.

Bring your original degree, transcripts, police check, marriage certificate and baby's birth certificate.

The degree, marriage and birth certs will need to be authenticated at the Thai MFA after you are here.

Miatta....

Going down the EDU visa route just complicates the whole process when it doesn't need to be.

.

Enter on a SETV (60 days + 30 day extension... gives you 90 days to get sorted).

.

Find a job.

Once you get your non-b and work permit you can put your husband and baby on non-O visas and all of you can get an extension of stay to match your contract.

.

As long as you stay with the same employer you simply get the annual extension of stay (b1900 each).

.

If/when you change employers then a quick visa run to get new SETVs for the 3 of you and start the non-B process all over again.

Children under 15 cannot be fined for overstay and children under 18 can't be banned for overstay. SO while it sounds bad, I'd say just bring the baby in on a 30 day visa exempt entry and let it overstay.

I'd say you both should just come in on 6 month METV's so you can get the lay of the land.

Once you find a job, you can fool with getting the right visa, getting a work permit and an extension of stay, then dealing with your husbands visa situation.

this all seems so strict but I do understand. Im not sure what the best options are now but you have certainly made the process easier for me to understand. Thank you so much.

you would cancel your ED visa extension, then get a Non-B <- business visa and work permit

great info thanks..if we were to go this route with the ED visa, after the 1 year is up or before would I be able to teach in thailand if I got hired by a school?

Umm, first off you have to enroll in a school, get paperwork from them and the Ministry of Education to apply for an Education visa at a thai consulate in another country.

You're only going to get a 90 day single entry ED visa based on studying in a private school, but you don't get stamped in for a year. Every 90 days you're going to go to the immigration office and apply for a new 90 day extension. You do that for the entire year.

Also you have to attend the minimum hours of class time required as well. PLUS you can't work on the ED visa, so if seeking employment is something you're going to do, just come in on a 6 month METV.

Sounds interesting. Would it just be easier to apply for an education visa for both my husband and I? That way we can stay in the country for a year...
