TLDR : Answer Summary
When renewing a British passport that has a Thai retirement visa, your friend must take both the old and new passports to the immigration office. Along with the passports, they need a letter from their embassy and to fill out the appropriate transfer form. The transfer of the visa to the new passport is straightforward and should not cause any issues.
