I've a friend in need. His non b ran out due to not being renewed and he wants to do a border hop at Kan to get 30 days before flying to UK in 2 weeks. Will he need papers at the border regarding cancelling his work permit, or just leave and re-enter?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The friend needs to cancel his expired Non-B visa and the associated work permit before making a border run to obtain a 30-day Visa Exempt Entry. He cannot just leave; he should get a receipt for the cancellation as proof, though there might not be a need to show it at the border.

WAIT, his Non B ran out?? You mean the Extension of Stay permitted up to date is in the past and he is in overstay?

Or if he can make a deal with his employer, ask to date the letter of resignation on the day he bought the ticket back to UK.

He need to cancel the WP and the Extension of Stay before he can leave the country. He can make a border run for a 30 day Visa Exempt Entry to bridge the time.

No, the date of permitted to stay would be changed in the passport
