Please advise: I work in Thailand on a nonBvisa, having to cancel my work permit in CM and cancel my visa, exit date is 16 March. All on the same day.

I have 2 options, green bus to Mae Sai or fly to Vientianne to get a 30 day tourist visa. This is my pp page:

What happens if you don't cancel and just leave the country?

Believe it or not
@Dy***
, even though their extensions had expired and they were stamped out of the country, gotten new Non-B visas from a thai consulate and came back into the country when they went for the new extension they were fined for overstaying on the old extension they didn't cancel (even though they stamped out of the country before it expired). They were fined 20K baht overstay and got the overstay stamp in their passport and THEN they could apply for the new yearly extension on the new Non-B . I know it sounds crazy but that's the real truth.

were they fined and did they eventually get a new extension?

@Dy***
, yep, you were,

I know more than a few people who after getting Non-B's from a thai consulate were put thru the wringer at the immigration office for not canceling a previous extension of stay based on employment
Dylan ********
Oh no. Guess I was lucky last time when I didn't cancel. My work permit was cancelled after I left and returned. Then got another non b and extension with no fuss.

very true. I still have mental scars from being ticked off at all three venues because I failed to cancel before... lol

It won't affect you getting a visa exempt entry or tourist visa from a thai consulate BUT if you are ever wanting to work here again legally you're gonna find out that failing to cancel your extension of stay will throw you off the rails when trying to get another extension. I know several people who were fined for not canceling their extensions when they left the country even though they were expiring it is NOT the same as canceling it at the immigration office.

you cancel a work permit at the Ministry of Labor when you quit work :/
Tod *********
That is not a visa, it is an extension of stay and it has to be canceled when you cancel your work permit.

@Mati ********
the school gives you your termination paperwork and you can cancel your work permit and extension on your own.

The work permit is canceled at the Ministry of Labor and the extension is canceled at the Promenada immigration office.

School gives proof of cancellation and then I go to the Work permit office in CM? Please say no... lol
Tod *********
umm when you cancel your work permit you immediately go to the immigration office and cancel your extension (you don't have a visa), and then you exit the country THAT day, or you buy a extension denied 7 day stamp to get out of thailand for 1900baht.
Robert *******
@Randall ********
If your Immigration Office want to stamp this Extension not approved and give you 7 days to leave the country, it is still the case.
Randall *********
At least with the 7 day 1900 baht extension

@Tod ********
may i ask if this is still the case?
Tod *********
@Ma**
, yep, once you cancel your extension at the immigration office you can either go and border-bounce at the Mae Sai - Tachiliek border with burma for a 30 day visa exempt stamp OR you can go to the thai consulate in Vientiane and get a 60 day tourist visa.
