TLDR : Answer Summary
Your friend can switch from a retirement visa to a 45-day visa exempt status by exiting Thailand and re-entering on a visa-exempt basis. He does not need to cancel his retirement visa before leaving, but he should ensure he does not have a re-entry permit, as that would allow him to be stamped back in under his retirement extension.

make sure he doesn't have a re-entry permit (which would get him stamped in again on the retirement extension) and just stamp out.

When he stamps back in he'll get a visa exempt entry

Can't change the reason for staying here? I know you can go from a Non-B to a Non-O here without leaving.

Wes am I missing something obvious here, why does your friend want to do this as the retirement visa seems better?
