What should I know about my DTV visa categorized under 'Learn Muay Thai' for long-term stay in Thailand?

Hello!

Last month got my DTV done from Savannakhet from an agent. I have now travelled to my home country & I will be coming to Thailand to stay for long term.

After going through various posts I came to know that there are many sub categories under which DTV is issued, so I asked my agent which category my visa is granted. I was surprised to hear 'Learn Muaythai'. I am 49 years old, not that fit health wise.

Now my doubts are:

1. Will immigration ask me about my DTV subcategory?

2. Can they ask for supporting documents? I do not have any & my agent is not giving me any documents now

3. If I want to extend my visa after 180 days within Thailand, do I have to show that I will keep on learning Muaythai or I can switch the category?

4. As a DTV holder under this category, can I do digital nomad related activities like working for my clients remotely & get paid out of Thailand?

5. I am aware that if I stay in Thailand for more than 180 days there could be tax implications on the money I bring in Thailand. But is it ONLY for the money brought in Thailand or the total income earned whilst in Thailand? I think I can use my credit card to withdraw & use cash, will it avoid taxation issues?

Any information/ insights/ suggestions welcome!

Thank you/ Danken

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user has successfully obtained a DTV visa categorized under ‘Learn Muay Thai’ in Savannakhet and is inquiring about potential immigration questions regarding their visa, required documents, extension possibilities, and work status as a digital nomad. Users in the comments suggest that once the visa is obtained, there typically aren’t questions asked upon entry. They advise that you will not need additional documents after approval and can work remotely for overseas clients without issue. Nevertheless, tax implications arise for residents spending over 180 days in Thailand, impacting the income brought into the country.

You bought an expensive package costing up to 90,000 Thai baht +/- for the DTV Visa from a Thai Visa Agent... and was taken to and obtained the DTV in Savannakhet.

NOW in your post you state you are a digital nomad providing on-line services to clients outside of Thailand.

WHY didn't you go to one of SEVERAL Thai Embassy's and Consulates in SE Asia which are issuing the DTV visa for digital nomads ? It's easy to get.

I assume that you did not have the 500,000 Thai baht in a bank account and you and the Thai Visa Agent fraudulently made the 500,000 Thai baht appear. And boom 💥 applied for the DTV Visa in Savannakhet.

Be prepared when you enter Thailand with your DTV visa,

As you may be asked questions about your Muay Thai training.

Good Luck 🍀

Once you have the visa that is the end of any more producing documents. You have been approved as per the criteria there is no need to show anything other than your approved visa. If anyone asks you questions just smile and nod your head " yes yes DTV thank you Thailand ". What other visa do you need ti show money at immagration when coming in. This talk is just scaremongering it's annoying

Your visa won't need extending for 5 years, so that's one concern removed.

No, no, probably, probably, who knows. Don't do an extension inside Thailand, bounce out and return.

Easier to try the extension first. They will tell if they "require" something.

Nobody seems very clear yet on what an extension involves but border bounces seem to work without having to provide additional information. I don't see why you can't work for remote non thai customers

As to money if you spend 180 days or more inside Thailand in a calendar year then you are a Thai tax resident. Any income you bring into Thailand in that year is liable for Thai tax, it doesn't matter how you bring it in. Cash in your pocket, withdrawal from ATM, bank transfer, etc they all count as bringing it in.

I have never been asked to show how much cash I bring in to Thailand in over 12 years, so how would this work in your response to the OP’s situation???

Have I just been extremely lucky???

@Von *****
there are 2 things

1. Honesty or you can just ignore the rules, up to you

2. If you use ATMs, bank transfers, etc your home country's revenue will inform thai revenue via CRS

You have the visa already, nobody is going to ask you anything on entry. Just show them the visa.

Immigration upon arrival at the airport can ask the visa holder about anything. Similarly, for DTV visa holders, they may want to see that they have money in their account and can ask about the purpose of their visit to Thailand, as well as inquire about their DTV visa. Therefore, everyone should be prepared for this situation.
Michael *******
I know from at least two people that immigration officials questioned them about money and the reason for visiting Thailand with DTV visas, and since they were not prepared and could not answer or show their money, they had problems. However, in most cases this does not happen and it depends entirely on the immigration officer who is checking the given individual. Therefore, I think it's important to know about this risk and be prepared for it, which is quite simple.

in theory yes it's true, in practice unlikely. Suggest the OP prepare themselves with a storyline, answers, and documents if they come under scrutiny.

agreed 👍

the only thing they will ask for is money in account, they aren't qualified to assess any other documents.

They can check anything related to your visa. They did it with ED (education).
