What are the latest updates and requirements for the DTV visa in Thailand?

I found two great videos on the DTV.

One is an interview with a Deputy General of Consular Affairs clearing up a lot of common questions people have about the DTV. The interview starts around the 3:23 mark. [members only]

The second is from Siam Legal about the Soft Power Activities option. [members only]

Some key information from the first video is that:

*You cannot apply for the DTV while in Thailand.

* After 180 days you can apply for an extension of another 180 days without doing a border run and leaving the country or having to provide proof that you are still eligible under whatever terms you applied (digital nomad or Soft Power Activities: medical appointments, conferences/seminars/festivals, Muay Thai training, Thai Yoga Massage training, Thai cooking lessons, etc.). There is no cost for this extension!

*After 360 consecutive days in residence however, you would have to leave Thailand. In the video they mentioned as short as a week, but gave no minimum (It could be less?) but you do not have to go far or outside the region). This would have a fee.

*You still have to check in every 90 days with this visa.

*After leaving the country you could then return for another 180+180 days as long as it’s still within the 5 year window, but you would then need to provide new documentation of either continued remote work, soft power activities or another medical appointment. I am not sure if this has a fee.

*Every time you leave and return to Thailand (within the five year window) the 180 day clock restarts after which you could apply for another 180 day extension. (I don’t believe it was specifically said, but I think you would have to resubmit documentation of either remote work, soft power activities or medical appointments at this time as well.) I am not sure if this has a fee.

*As of the making of that video, there is no minimum amount of time you have to engage in soft power activities to be eligible. I took that to mean you could schedule as little as a few days of soft power activities but as people have noted here your acceptance may depend on the official who is reviewing your application.

Hope this helps someone the way it helped me! Let me know if anything is different from how I described based on the videos or personal experience!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion covers key details about the Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) in Thailand, referencing two videos that clarify common questions. Important points include that one cannot apply for the DTV while in Thailand, the ability to request 180-day extensions without a border run, and the requirement to leave the country after 360 consecutive days. Users debated the implications of visa extensions being potentially free, the necessity of checking in every 90 days, and updated requirements for re-entry, emphasizing the current lack of clarity on extension processes and costs. Multiple comments point out discrepancies in the provided information, particularly around extension fees and the necessity of presenting documentation upon re-entry.

Please provide evidence that further work documentation is required after 180+180 days. This is not on the embassy website.

Where did this "information " come from? The Thai government? The lawyer’s office?

This is really a concern for those who plan to use the DTV.

Tell us more please…..
Deepak *******
@Cliff ********
why are concerned if they ask for documentation during extension. Are you afraid that you won't be able to provide.
Chris ******
If entering Thailand with the DTV visa (allowing you to stay 18p days) do you have to report at immigration after 90 days?
Deepak *******
yes. It does not matter what visa you possess or how you entered legally. You are obligated to report to IO if you stay 90 days or more consecutively. The only exception is the LTR visa holders.
Chris ******
On a 180 day DTV visa you still have to report to immigration after 90 days ?? Is this absolutely correct?
Elías ********
@Chris *****
Yes. People have already done it.
Tore *********
The RWFY video is full of already confirmed incorrect information……

The extension obviously will not be free, 90 day reporting is confirmed to be required.

This video has been discussed over and over already

, they will NOT ask new documents when you re-entry.

Once you have your 5 years you can anytime re enter.
Chris ******
@Benjamin ********
I would think this is correct, and not have to get another approval letter. But, is it required to report or go into an immigration office after your first 90 days stay

??

I'd consider editing your post with respect to the extensions having no charge to saying it's unknown would be more accurate. Historically every extension in Thailand has a charge. It's usually 1900THB but so far the fee involved with the DTV is unknown and is pure speculation. As numerous others have pointed out the MFA is not immigration and doesn't set the rules around extensions.

Nothing new to the educated on this visa. The RW4U video is 3 months old, but had pretty good info at the time. I didn't watch the more recent Siam legal video yet, but I suspect no surprises.

I might add that entering Thailand very near the visa expiry date would get you another 180 day stamp, and with a 180 day extension in country, you could get virtually 6 years out of the visa.

As others have pointed out, immigration, and not the MFA will decide what's required to extend in country. Other visas I know about require you meet most of the same parameters as when you applied, and cost 1,900 or so. I expect this one to be the same, but who knows?

If it is the same, in county extensions will be 1,900 and will require you to show 500k in the bank, and if soft power, that you're still attending class.

They don't have the wherewithal to do that kind of thing at the airport or land borders. So leaving the country every 180 days might be the better option.

Many of this information doesn't seem correct, regardless of who said this. The PDF visa says it's valid for 5 years, so as long you exit before any consecutive 180 days, you just get a new 180 stamp upon each entry. It's been like that so far for people exiting and reentering. As for extensions in country, yeah, nobody has a firsthand experience yet.

nothing you just said has conflicted with what I described or what was in the video. The official said it would be a new 180 stamp when you leave the country and that it’s valid for five years as did I (although I used different terms). Since nobody has first hand experience of an extension yet I’m not sure why an official’s word is less trustworthy at this point than personal opinions about what *might* happen or change. We’re all going to have to wait and see how this shakes out.

Anonymous participant That official is from the MFA. It is Immigration and not MFA who have the power over entry and extensions. This is from the MFA website ". Royal Thai Embassies and Royal Thai Consulates-General have the authority to issue visas to foreigners for travel to Thailand. The authority to permit entry and stay in Thailand, however, is with the immigration officers"
Elías ********
Participante anónimo Ah, I wrote another comment. I was referring specifically to the need to prove enough funds or contracts again. Also, I've been living in Asia for 15 years, and I know how the Ministries of Foreing Affairs and Justice (or whatever has Immigration under its charge) always give conflicting information, but at the end only what Immigration (which IS NOT under the MOFA) does is important for visa matters.

Resubmit proof of remote work? What would be the point of this, the document is exactly the same provided when apply for dtv. I have it in my email, but how can they ask that at the airport when you arrive? You already have the visa. You think they just say oh, go back to your home country to get the documents, sorry nobody told you about this, bye now take care?
Pete *******
Regardless of what the MFA says there is still no clarity regarding in country extensions. No one knows the requirements or cost. There has been recent chatter that the Immigration Office will refuse in country extensions. It’s all unclear at this time.
Angelo ***********
@Pete ******
The cost is 1900 THB, like every extension.

There are no requirements. That is why no one "knows about special requirements".
Pete *******
@Angelo **********
nope, guesses range between 1900 baht and 10k for in county extension. Your guess is as good as any other. Point me to an official source for your statement.
Angelo ***********
@Pete ******
Every extension is 1900THB. No idea about "your guesses".
Pete *******
@Angelo **********
you are guessing that the DTV extension is 1900baht. There has been no official announcement from the Royal Thai Police.
Angelo ***********
@Pete ******
Which about: ALL EXTENSIONS ARE 1900THB, is escaping you?

The Royal Thai Police does not announce prices for extensions.

Unless you want to nitpick and mean Immigration office, which is a sub department of the Royal Thai Police.

I seriously wonder why people like you are posting here and are fear mongering.

An extension is an extension.

Does not matter if it is:

- Visa exempt

- Tourist visa

- Retirement visa (Non O based on retirement)

- Marriage visa (Non O based on marriage)

- Business visa (Non B based on business purposes)

- and so on

And, if you are in doubt: then go to immigration right now and extend it right now. There is no time limit for visa extensions.

Thai do not like "exceptions" the idea that a DTV has an exception for extensions, is just ridiculous.

Good Bye.
Pete *******
@Angelo **********
nothing you have said is factual and can be backed up with evidence. Of course the RTP set the rules and pricing and if you go to the Immigration office today to extend your DTV you will be turned away. Learn to speak with facts.
Angelo ***********
@Pete ******
The evidence is: you are an idiot.

EVERY EXTENSION is: 1900 THB. At the moment.

Perhaps tomorrow it changes.

Today an DTV is 1900.
Pete *******
@Angelo **********
Simply not true and you cannot provide any evidence to contradict me when I say your guessing. The requirements and price of a DTV extension is currently unknown.
Angelo ***********
@Pete ******
The current price is 1900THB - as for every extension.

You are silly.
Deepak *******
@Angelo **********
No visa extensions have any fees other than 1900 baht. Again, I seriously doubt the quality of DTV visa holders, their reading comprehension ability, and their reading interpretation ability.
Elías ********
@Pete ******
They could charge whatever amount they want, but if they charge 10K baht it should not be called an "extension", as it's paying the 100% cost of the visa again.
Greg ********
@Pete ******
Exactly. The MFA are only responsible for issuing the DTV. It is Royal Thai Immigration who have power over entry and extensions. As you say there is no clarity at this time.
