Can someone enlighten me on what happens to your passport status after you sell up and move permanently to Thailand on a retirement visa

Assuming you have multiple years left before passport expires ,

Your Passport information will contain your now outdated old home address

should you inform your home embassy or consulate in Thailand and give them your Thailand address so that they can replace your current passport with a new passport showing your new Thailand address

Or What. ??

If you continue to use your passport with your now outdated address could you be denied entry into your home country due to you sharing the same address as the people who bought your old home and now have passports of their own

TLDR : Answer Summary
When moving permanently to Thailand on a retirement visa, it is generally not necessary to update your passport with your new address in Thailand, as most passports do not display your residential address. The passport remains valid until its expiration date, and you won't face issues with entry into your home country simply because your passport has an outdated address. If you need to renew your passport, you can provide your current address on the application form at that time. It’s advisable to check in with your embassy or consulate in Thailand for specific guidance but usually, address updates are not required.

Is a valid question Paul !! I bet a lot of people never thought of this so overlook the " smart travelers" here ,!!! But I think your question is answered,👌
Bruce *******
Status remains the same because its proof of citizenship.

I renewed my 🇬🇧 passport in Thailand and you will have to give your address on the form in order to receive the new passport

The form is the standard one for the British passport application

It is found within the name of the document… Passport…

Pass through any Port

The whole concept is as an Identifier of a person that is recognised as a Citizen of a country to allow movement through other countries.

Where your abode or address within the origin of your Citizenship is of no importance to the country you are visiting/travelling through, they want to know WHERE you are staying when within their country.

Short answer... It isn't a problem, never had been.. Never will be.

I've had 4 UK addresses and 2 Thai while I've had this passport.. Never questioned in anyway.
Bonnie *******
You also may be able to vote using your last address depending on the state

My passport was issued in Peterborough, UK when I had already left the country, so the address they used was a Premier Inn! No-one has ever questioned it

Some people really just need to stay home.
Kevin ******
When you apply for a passport, you provide your address on the application form, and that address may be stored by the passport office or issuing authority in their records but it’s not linked to the physical document.

If you register with your country’s embassy or consulate while living abroad, then your passport and address can be linked in their internal system but this is still separate from the passport itself.

Nothing changes with the status of the passport. Your passport has nothing to do with where you live. When it's due to expire just apply for a new one at your chosen address
Steve *******
Your passport doesn't have address/house/home details in it.

It's purely proof of Nationality/Citizenship
Peter ******
As soon as you arrive in Thailand , go straight to the British Embassy and and request a meeting with the Ambassador and tell him where you will be staying in Thailand , then go to Pattaya and give the first woman you see all your money

Go to sleep, its 2am. Does your caregiver know you're awake? The purpose of a passport is to leave your country.

Passport is issued to "the person" regardless of where they go live. My son's got a US passport and never lived there in 48years.

You are over thinking this.

Your passport is valid as it is till expiry date.

You will never be questioned on this where ever in the world you go as long as it is valid including your SA.
Brandon ************
What passport has your address in it? I've never seen that before.

all passports hold your address electronically

I actually faced problems returning to US because of this. We have been abroad for 15 years. My passport expired June of 2024. I renewed using the embassy in Rome (living in Italy at that time). Flew to Texas in August and no problems. We did a run across the border into Mexico. Coming back I got detained by ICE because I didn't have a USA address. They let me go when I showed my Italian carta d identita. CRAZY I know!! The equivalent of a non-US document letting me back into the US when I was a legitimate (nearly lifelong 67 years) passport holder.

I can only assume that because my passport was issued through an embassy that triggered something. In hindsight I probably should have renewed using my brother's address stateside.

So to answer OP question. At least in my case it did make a difference.
Jeffrey *********
@Mary *******
I don't know what happened in your case, but there is absolutely no requirement for a US citizen to maintain a US address - and I say this as a former passport officer.
Brandon ************
@Mary *******
But there is no way to "update" your address like the op was stating. You get a passport and that is your passport for 10 years. There is no updating anything.
Mary ********
@Brandon ***********
absolutely true. It SHOULDN'T make a difference but we are in a new era. Doors are closing world wide.
Aaron *********
@Mary *******
agreee on the doors closing but also the US has a weird obsession with documents for a democracy. I watched a documentary recently where they the lad couldn't event get a train in California without ID - China is the only other country I can think of that does that
Bent *************
@Paul ******
It holds the adresse you had when you applied for the passport, but it’s still valid for 10 years no matter how many times and how many addresses you change.

The following information is on your passport or identity card:

passport photo;

surname;

first names;

date of birth;

place of birth;

gender;

height;

signature;

citizen service number (bsn) (this can also be on the ID card as a QR code);

document number;

nationality;

2 fingerprints (are not visible).

This is info about a passport from the Netherlands
Mikkel *******
@Paul ******
if that were true you'd have to get a new passport anytime you moved within your own country. A passport is not linked to an address.
Willem ****
@Paul ******
Not true. I moved a few times in my country and never had to show my passport any time. No altering of any data on my passport.
