What should I do if my husband tests positive for COVID-19 upon arrival in Thailand despite providing recovery documentation?

We had a medical exemption bc we are covid recovered. However, the Berkeley hotel manager wouldn’t accept the medical exception and forced us all to take another PCR and while we were all negative back home, they are saying my husband is positive and needs to to go a hotel.

Help.

Updated:

I had emailed the Bangkok hotel our recovery forms, our positive results and 2 negative PCRs from California before from we left home. I had given him and emailed him a copy of all the Thai government screenshots.

He confiscated my recovery certificate, called the police, there was a warrant against us, police raided our hotel in Chiang Mai.

I have attached my emails to the embassy below.

As you can see, the Bangkok police were never told about my recovery certificate.

I’m sure it was just a misunderstanding.

Please have multiple copies of all your papers.

I hope this helps someone avoid confusion and stress.

Absolutely LOVED LOVED LOVED Thailand and especially the kind, polite and respect Thai people. The culture is wonderful. We extended our trip and had a wonderful time.

Can’t wait to go back soon.@[1600831506671146:11809:]

TLDR : Answer Summary
An expat family faced difficulties upon arrival in Thailand when the hotel manager refused to accept their COVID-19 recovery documentation. The husband's positive test result led to police involvement and confusion over quarantine requirements. The family had presented recovery and negative test documents, yet faced challenges with local health authorities. They advised future travelers to maintain multiple copies of essential documents to avoid similar issues and reflected positively on their overall experience in Thailand.

how did this end? Was your husband able to avoid hospital or hotel isolation? My gf is also recently recovered and and wants to visit but is worried about this potential situation. Hope everything turned out well with you 🙏

We showed them the website. They said there’s nothing they can do about it.

the website also isn't specific enough unfortunately. It says people in that situation can enter Thailand, doesn't say without quarantine unfortunately. Was trying to find any official text that's more specific, and I couldn't find any.

They wanted to do chest X-rays which we refused and charged us $3k US dollars for 12 hours in the hospital

The hospital said since we are negative Axa won’t cover the costs of the hospital stay and made us pay to be released.

@Sara ****
wow, so I guess the certificate of the recovery doesn't officially help with a positive result in Thailand. At least it isn't automatic nor easy, and sounds like there isn't a clear policy on this situation.

Knowing this, my gf will probably not come.

Thanks for sharing 🙏

@Sara ****
Thanks for the update! I've seen that official statement you highlighted saying recovered vaccinated people can enter Thailand, but it isn't clear regarding not going to quarantine or hospital if testing positive in Thailand. Other than carrying official copies of documents, is there any official policy on this that we can carry and refer to in case of confusion by anyone that insists or quarantine or hospital stay?

Glad you had a good trip. What was the outcome after the raid? Free to go, or any quarantine or isolation expected?

Thanks again 🙏

they retested us. The doctor said his hands are tied bc once you’re positive, you’re in the system.

Thai public health and the embassy finally contacted the police

I'm sorry, I am not clear from your post if you are in Thailand already or where you have gotten tested positive. Are you in your Test & Go hotel and got the RT-PCR test result? What is Berkeley? This is the correct procedure:

It is important that you are aware that Thailand's normal policy if you test positive upon arrival is that you are required to be taken into hospital quarantine for 10 days - even if asymptomatic.

As you likely know, it is possible to test positive on a RT-PCR test for several months after recovering from Covid, and Thailand's test sensitivity is higher than that of many countries. There have been multiple incidents of arriving passengers who tested negative pre-departure, and positive upon arrival.

A certificate of recovery does NOT exempt you from needing to take the arrival RT-PCR test.

However, the Thailand Pass FAQs webpage states the following regarding traveling after a previous covid infection:

"Those who have recovered from COVID-19 within 3 months before travelling to Thailand must present a valid COVID-19 recovery form or medical certificate certifying that they have recovered from COVID-19 within 3 months before travelling or are asymptomatic in case their COVID-19 RT-PCR test shows a positive result."

The Samui Command Center in charge of Covid testing for arriving passengers also has confirmed on 23 Dec that you are not transferred to the hospital if tested positive, as long as you have certificate of recovery per the above conditions. You will be released normally after your Test & Go period even with a positive test result, as long as it can be checked that the result is from recovery from having covid. Wether this policy is the same nationwide, I don't know.

If he recently had Covid he can still test positive, even though he isn't. Thai tests are more sensitive apparently. But I'd pay for another re test, because mistakes are made .
Mark ********
Medical covid exemption isn't good enough to come to Thailand (you must test negative pre flight as you say you all did and post flight plus on day 6 or 7).... nothing to do here I'm afraid.
Chris *******
Unfortunately it is the gamble we all have taken to travel at this uncertain time.

The positive test is a very very small portion of the entries but does happen.

Hopefully it is resolved quickly.

I can't see any other thing eventuating than your husband going to a hospital tbh. It's so strict here and I haven't heard of the 'medical exemption because covid recovered'. Asking for a second pcr didn't seem to work for a guy's daughter in a similar situation recently either. Good luck to you both...

Unfortunately, there is confusion and chaos with regard to covid.

Please read my email to the embassy attached.

So you both tested RT-PCR negative before your flight to Thailand and he has tested positive on arrival.

When did he recover from COVID?

Do you have a medical certificate of COVID recovery from your doctor/hospital ?

Did you take a COVID vaccine dose shot during the past 90 days ?

Is he fully vaccinated?

What airline did you fly on to Thailand ?

What health insurance did you buy for the entry into Thailand?

Are you in Bangkok or Phuket?

If in Bangkok...here is an alternative to the high cost hospital quarantine...especially if his insurance will not cover his quarantine costs...

"FYI...as we are seeing reports of persons arriving and testing COVID positive upon results of their arrival RT-PCR test...WITHOUT SYMPTOMS

Or during your stay in Thailand...

I am sharing this as a solution to the high costs of the required hospital quarantine of 10-14 nights ...usually 100,000-150,000 Thai baht and more...

You can request transfer to this hospital....CONTACT THEM FIRST.

Samitivej Hospital in Bangkok at cost of 33,000 Thai baht per person.

11-Day Health Watch—An Alternative Hospital Quarantine (AHQ) Program.

11-DAY HEALTH WATCH—AN ALTERNATIVE HOSPITAL QUARANTINE (AHQ) PROGRAM.

11-Day Health Watch—An Alternative Hospital Quarantine (AHQ) Program.

Samitivej Hospital offers this service to patients who are monitoring their health for a Covid-19 infection. The service includes personal healthcare specialists providing care in a safe environment, with sterilized rooms that are free from infection and disease and cleaned to the highest standards using a UVC disinfection device.

Applying for the alternative hospital quarantine service

Samitivej Hospitals have been designated by the Ministry of Public Health as alternative hospital quarantine (AHQ) sites for Thais and foreign nationals, both for patients and those accompanying them. The services covers recent arrivals from abroad entering Thailand for the treatment of complex health issues, chronic conditions, and specialist surgical procedures, as well as for medical and wellness tourism, such as cosmetic surgery and fertility treatment. Such patients require close monitoring for a COVID-19 infection and must remain under observation for at least 11 days."

We all recovered from covid 30 days ago

Everyone has 2 negative tests before flying

Ana airlines

Axa insurance (the more expensive option)

I’m in Bangkok at the Berkeley hotel which I found out is also a hospitel.

Everyone is fully vaccinated with in 90 days.
James ********
@Sara ****
thank you for your reply.

Thankfully...if your son has the AXA Sawadee Thailand insurance policy it should pay for his quarantine bills as he tested positive on arrival.

As for your added costs I am not sure if AXA will pay as you and other family members are not COVID positive. Be sure to contact your Agent for AXA.

Traveling in such a short time to Thailand is problematic. As the Thailand laboratories appear to be more sensitive in picking up residual COVID particles ...

AND to travel to Thailand within 90 days of COVID recovery appears to place you at risk of testing positive.

Had you flown Emirates they would have covered most all quarantine costs for the family. (btw...that Emirates benefit ended December 1).

Did ANA have a free COVID policy as Emirates offered? I will look to see.

Sorry this has happened to you and family. Please update us on outcomes as others are and will be traveling to Thailand having recovered from COVID. Best Wishes 🙏🙏

its all a very disheartening situation and sadly Thailand has no clue in how to manage it.

Obvious from the getgo a year ago and no better today.

One would think they would have a single set of guidelines in these matters but they do not.

Indeed its not a good time to travel for tourism in Thailand.

If one has loved ones there or its your home, then return to Thailand.
