Hi. Bumped into australian guy yesterday that has overstayed by 1 month on tourist visa. Does he pay fine at airport or can he pay fine at local immigration and if so can he extend his visa or does he have to leave asap. Thanks in advance.

TLDR : Answer Summary
An Australian individual who has overstayed his tourist visa in Thailand by one month must pay a fine. He can settle this fine of 500 baht per day at the immigration office before leaving the country, where an overstay fine accumulates up to a maximum of 20,000 baht. However, he cannot extend his visa due to the length of the overstay. It's advisable for him to address the issue at the immigration office, as confronting police might lead to arrest or deportation. If he resolves it at immigration, he could receive a 7-day stamp to leave legally.
Actually it doesn't matter if he's on a 60 day tourist visa OR a 30 day visa exempt entry. IF he has a month overstay he can't get any extension on it because they only issue a 30 day extension dated from the date your entry stamp expires.
He could go to the immigration office pay the overstay fine of 500 baht a day and then immediately get an "extension of stay denied" 7 day stamp to get out of the country. That would at least make him legal for a week so he can leave the country rather than chance the fact he'll get caught out on something else while on overstay <-which will open a whole different can of worms for them..
Hmm, I'd say passports don't get "destroyed" by washing them, they get "washed out" but they don't get destroyed.
He needs to get a new passport ASAP, OR an emergency travel document from his consulate so he can go back to his country. He can pay the overstay fine when he flies out, BUT as other people stated don't let him overstay more than 90 days or he'll get banned for a year when he stamps out of the country
Just a note on that slim chance Todd, every time I've traveled to Phuket from Khaolak on the public bus (both the local one and the ones from chumpon and suratthani, I've had my I'd (passport) checked at the Sarasin checkpoint.
IF he is stopped by the police there is a slim chance of that happening. BUT if he goes to the immigration office there is NO chance of that happening.
Hes got about a 10% chance of them extending his visa. Genereally would have to be under good circumstances. He can jst turn himself in when he flys out pay the fine of 500 baht per day / max 20k baht ..
Make sure it doesnt exceed 90 days then there are serious concequences... if he gets caught will be banned 3 yrs. Turning himself in will be 1 yr (and 20kbaht fine)
