TLDR : Answer Summary
A friend is applying for a single entry tourist visa online and is concerned about the requirement to show proof of 20,000 THB. It has been confirmed by several community members that a bank statement showing this amount is indeed a common requirement for visa applications. While some feel this is intrusive, it appears to be standard procedure to ensure tourists have sufficient funds for their stay. Various experiences shared indicate that similar proof is often asked for at consulates and upon entry into Thailand.

I guess it it clear, If you apply for a visa you meet the requirements. Even when this is an on -line application.

Thanks for all the contributions, but there is a huge difference between application on-line even before you jump into an airplane and after a long flight walk to the Immigration desk on the airport in Thailand.

you can't get a tourist visa from MANY thai consulates in the world without showing a bank statment, SO intrusive or not, you want the tourist visa you meet the requirements 😕

Wasn't online, but I applied for my single entry tourist visa in the Royal Thai Consulate in Kuala Lumpur in December. The officer specifically asked for bank statements showing balances and fund movements covering the last three months.

I'm not sure that it is too intrusive considering you are supposed to have 20,000 thb, or foreign equivalent, on your possession when you go through immigration if arriving on a tourist visa or visa exempt. They rarely ask for it, but it is a requirement they can deny entry for if they choose to.

OP is asking about the requirement of visa application, not the entry requirement.

I understood that. I was responding to the part where they thought it was intrusive. If they think it's intrusive to show a bank statement proving they have it then they may be even more surprised to find out they need to actually have that in cash on them at entry. Doesn't seem intrusive to me to show proof during the visa process that you can meet one of the entry requirements. I was trying to point that out, but may not have been very clear.

do you see a difference between 'physically' showing the cash and sending personal details?

if they do ask to see it at immigration then you need to have it physically on you. There have been posts on here of people not having it and they would not accept a bank statement or for them to go to an ATM to withdraw it (I think the atms are after immigration). It is rarely asked, but can be.

yes, I've personally done it many time before the evisa system and never had to show proof, although I did make sure I had that much on my person, arriving at immigration.

i guess it really depends on the IO. If it's up to them to ask, then I guess it is up to them whether or not they would accept a bank statement or some other proof. All I know is you can be denied entry if you don't have it on you. Not something worth risking since one will need cash here anyways.

Whatever they ask is what you have to give them.

I used to have to give bank statements for a lot more than 20.000 baht for a multiple entry TV in the days when I was young(er). 600K - 800K.. can't remember exact amount.

There was one time when my visa was under review, they even called me to send proof of no criminal record to get my visa approved.

They ask, you have to give.

a copy of a bank statement will do, if the balance at least equals the 20.000 Thb.

Intrusive or not, it seems that tourist need to have some money to enjoy a good time in Thailand.

you're confusing entry requirements (which state you can be asked to show 20K baht or the equivalent in CASH) when you stamp in with requirements to BUY a tourist visa from a thai consulate in another country.

I was under the impression that you needed cash in the event that the I.O. requested proof on arrival in Thailand.

It is cash when you entry the country and being asked by Immigration on the airport.

it is bank statements when you apply for a visa at a Thai Embassy or on-line
