For those seeking tourist visas in Phnom Penh, I just came back from Thai Embassy and several people in front of me were denied for not being able to show the 20 thousand THB req. I was not seeking a TR visa, so I have no further details, but just a heads up.

P.s. In the snippets of conversation I overheard, they appeared to want bank statements.

We were able to enter and didn't have to show that or even a return ticket and we have five kids

Embassies always wanted bank statements. Been to several countries in the region and that was always a requirement.

on the 3 occasions I have been asked to prove proof of funds, I have been able to open the K-bank app and shown a balance in excess of 20,000฿. Never once have they demanded to see cash (although I could have easily walked back to an airside ATM and withdrawn it). This has been at Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi. Never been asked at Phuket.

plain and simple you were lucky, there's nothing else about it. They are not obligated to allow you to show a bank balance online, credit card, etc,

AND

as far as I know, there are no ATM's air-side before you hit passport control.

So we will chalk it up to you being lucky and still tell people what the actual requirements are should they be asked

reality is IF ASKED Thai Immigration wants to see 20,000 Thai baht in CASH or equal currency. No bank statements nor allowed to use an ATM...so be prepared...especially if you have history of staying in Thailand using visa and COVID extensions

Remember this:

Embassies want signed copies from bank statements to file with the application.

Immigration on the airports want to SEE if you have the 20.000 Thb or equivalent currency in cash.

I was also just there all the asked for were flight in and out... I had all the other paperwork (Thailand pass, bank statement, insurance, hotel booking) they just weren't interested in it. Maybe all that gets checked on arrival...?
