TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, when applying for a Single Entry Tourist Visa (SETV) in Kuala Lumpur, you need to provide proof of funds, which typically means a bank statement. However, if you're asked for proof of funds upon entering Thailand, displaying cash is acceptable.

KL requires proof of funds, proof of onward travel and proof of a hotel booking or confirmed lodging.

The way proof of funds works is

IF you apply for a visa at a thai consulate and are asked for proof of funds you show a bank statement

IF you are asked for proof of funds when entering thailand you show cash.
