What is the latest news on showing proof of funds for a tourist visa/30s day stamp, when going through immigration?

My family is coming next week and would like to give a heads up to be prepared for this. They are flying into Suvarnabhumi.

TLDR : Answer Summary
When entering Thailand on a tourist visa or 30-day stamp, the likelihood of being asked to show proof of funds is quite low for genuine tourists. Many travelers report never being asked for such documentation at immigration. However, having some cash on hand is advised for peace of mind, particularly 10,000 THB per person or 20,000 THB for families as a precaution. The consensus is that travelers with a clean entry record and limited history of back-to-back visa exemptions are unlikely to face scrutiny regarding their funds.

People are always asking this question lately. It seems a small amount of money to carry for peace of mind. Personally, I wouldn't enter any foreign country without a reasonable amount of cash in case I run into problems with my credit/debit cards, at some point.

As has been stated; of the many thousands of people who enter thailand every week, few if ANY are asked for proof of funds when they arrive here. Those that are asked either are from one of the countries that BUY a visa on arrival (and that has the 3 proof ofs as part of the deal to enter the country) OR people entering on a visa exempt entry with a history of living here on back-2-back visa exempt or tourist visa entries.

A while back when there was the alleged 'crack down' <- (which there wasn't btw) the people who were asked for proof of funds, were unable to meet the requirement, denied entry and sent back ALL had extensive visa exempt, tourist visa histories here.

I would say a genuine tourist comin' here would not even garner a second look when getting stamped into the country. If it makes you feel better, make sure the have the required cash on them.

Regular tourists should have absolutely no concern

Always hard cash and nothing else like bank accout.

Never been asked, and never have more than about 20 GBp when flying in - just go to the ATM and get Baht as and when. Came in without a visa last year - asked for a 30 day visa on arrival, asked for address - "It's on the card" OK.. Very helpful. said go to Nakon Phanom and the lady there will give you an extension - which she did, then went over to Laos and got a years visa. I have always found the Immigration to be helpful, be polite and tell the truth. NP IO - because I live in their area.

So...dont just go to the ATMs because you can't.

@David ***********
you are correct. If I was asked I would just show my SCB card.

I thought it was posted that there are no ATM machines before immigration point.

Last time I came in

Some lady from immigration gave me some difficulties

Asking questions and stuff

But really

The only thing she didn't ask for was funds

They will be fine

Never been asked.

Have used TR for years up to getting my retirement extension.

But never asked or challenged for return flights. Out of Thailand.

It's a case of if the face fits I think?

Genuine entrants should have no issues.

If you look suspect... haha. Lol.

10k baht for a person travelling alone and 20k baht for a family in cash and the money can be either in baht or in other currency but should be equivalent to the above mentioned baht.....and there are high rate of chances that you might be asked to show the money.....

Thanks
@BoSe *******
, this is what I was looking for. My family is genuine tourists, but wanted to have them prepared in case-last thing i want is to leave it to chance and not have the family vacation.
Tod *********
Umm,
@Bo**
, there is an extremely LOW chance that genuine tourists would be asked for proof of funds. Mostly the immigration officers target people who have histories of living here on back-2-back visa exempt entries or tourist visas

Visa is 20k or 40k per family, visa exempt is 10k per adult. But the chances of being asked at the airport are super slim.

Nothing new just have a passport...but if you want to err on the side of caution have them bring ฿20,000 or the equivalent just in case
Valère *************************
Better safe than sorry. Don't need to be THB so any currency value that amount will do.

@Joshua ******
some have been asked to show 20,000THB or equivalent....but most of those people have multiple successive visa exemptions on back to back status [think offshore oil workers on a
*****
rotation]...the odds of your family being stopped for a check are extremely low if they only come like 1-3 times a year or once every couple years etc...but weirder things have happened...

@Tod ********
so All the People(a handful) that have been asked to show proof of funds at Suvarnabhumi, is not a set amount? Just the immigration office checking on his own?

@Joshua ******
you are confusing what the financial requirements are at a thai consulate when you get a visa with the financial requirements at passport control when you ENTER thailand.

Consulates require bank accounts for proof of funds, passport control requires cash.
Robert ********
Must be cash, Thai baht or the equivalent in any other currency.
