Hi, I've got a workpermit and a Non-immigrant visa. I'm going to leave my school and study. I have to change to an ed-visa. Do I need to cancel my workpermit first or my visa first?

Any help on this... :)

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user inquired about the process of transitioning from a work permit and non-immigrant visa to an ed-visa. The community advised that the work permit should be canceled first, then visit the immigration office to cancel the extension of stay based on the work permit. Clarifications were made that an extension of stay is not the same as a visa and that one must exit Thailand to apply for a new ed-visa, especially if transitioning while in the country could lead to overstays.

Beware, my WP was cancelled and I got receipt too late to go to imm that day to change from B to O. Got there at 0900 and had all the right stuff but still got charged 2 days overstay. Go figure!

It is USED, yes. My point is that I have to apply online for my new ed-visa, if I want to go to Singapore. This will take time, so I can't cancel my visa because it'll be invalid immediately. So if I can't cancel my work visa, I can't apply for another visa.

Penang you walk in or use an agent on day one pick up the visa next day if you meet al the requirements of that visa.

Ok, I get the VISA and extension thing now. I can't go to Singapore as I need to apply for it online, which takes time. How's Penang?

You do NOT have a VISA, you have an Extension of Stay based on Working. The day you stop working the reason of staying in Thailand stops. Sorry to tell you but this is how it works. cancel Work Permit, cancel your Extension and leave the country.

Let's try to explain: You wrote that your inside of Thailand on an Extension of Stay. That means you are NOT inside of Thailand on a non immigrant Visa it is one or the other. You bought the Visa at a consulate or Embassy, on entry they put a stamp or wrote: USED on the visa, from that moment is is invalid and just a memory in your passport and before the last day of Admitted to Stay date you went to Immigration to apply for an Extension of Stay based on working. The day you go cancel your Work Permit you also visit Immigration Office and cancel your Extension of Stay. Than you leave Thailand and apply for the Visa of your choice if you meet the requirements.

, you go to the immigration office with documentation from your employer stating you're not working anymore and cancel your extension. You don't need a flight out

The papers you get from the Ministry of Labor when you cancel your work permit.

what he said :) cancel your work permit, and go to the immigration office and cancel your extension. Then leave the country that day.

I just thought about that I can't apply for an ed visa if I already have a non immigrant visa, am I wrong?

That sounds great, Iโ€™ll look into that. Cheers all for your useful information...๐Ÿ™‚

singapore does NOT do walk up visa applications anymore. It's all done online, you scan and submit your documentation to them and they email you when your application is approved and when you can go there to get the visa.

And by this link you can apply even before you leave Thailand:

I am not concerned with what you are getting once you leave thailand I'm asking you are you on the original entry of a VISA or are you on an extension that you got from the thai immigration office?

The top is an example of a VISA and under it is an example of an extension, which one are you on now?

it's just a couple of minutes at the Ministry of Labour that issued your work permit.

Is the WP cancelation a one day process or 2 days?
Tod *********
you go in fill out a form and cancel it. Take your resignation or termination papers from your company.
Tod *********
you cancel your work permit, then take that receipt and documentation from your company to the immigration office and cancel your extension of stay.

IF you are still on the original entry from a VISA you don't cancel it and you can stay until it expires.
